The last ones are for Spridgets. Is that what you've got?

The first set is good, but I'd reccomend the ST ones due to more bearings on the layshaft.

i wouldn't say they're necassary running 12psi tbh if your box is in good nick. i would consider SC drop gears though.

if you do get SC gears then its the ones in the first link you want *wink*

Working up the BHP ladder.

Those are 2 of the 3 drop gears. Try to get a S/C set if budget allows, or they'll probably pop sooner or later.

Pre A plus??

That link is wrong, or they have told you wrong.

What you need depends on how much you want to spend and how you will drive the car.

If you have little money then stick to the standard gearbox, with a set of straight cut drop gears (c£200) and drive it GENTLY, e.g. no massive wheelspin starts etc.

If you have a bit more money add to this a cross pin diff (another c£200) to make the final drive stronger, you can give it some more stick now.

Finally if you have long arms and shallow pockets spend another £600-odd and buy a full straight cut gearset, and all the bearings etc in order to build it into a gearbox casing, you will then have nigh on the strongest gearbox possible without spending thousands, and also a fully rebuilt gearbox from when you fit it all or have someone fit it for you.

Hi,
The drop gears are probably more important than the main gears if you're on a budget.
Or stick with standard and keep the boost down, and drive it simpatheticaly *wink* (sp?)
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I like nice quiet girly Minis

Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

It's easy enough to rig up something to limit boost in 1st gear which is the main course of smashed standard boxes in my experience.

You need to be very careful when you inspect / rebuild the gear box but you can definately (with sensible driving) run upto about 140bhp (120 - 125 lb/ft typically) through a standard set-up.

I am currently trying to get 5 minutes to draw breath early enough in an evening to do some machining and have a scheme for helical drops running with better support / lubrication (1 set done and still working after several years in a 160 bhp motor now in a 122bhp NA engine).

The main problems with the drops is the thrust loads causing wear which in turn causes loading / alignment issues which in turn can effect the health of the main box if your really unlucky.

I really dislike SC anything in a road car, drove friends Mini at the weekend (1430 NA with weber , SC drops, SC gearset but loads of sound proofing) and couldn't hold a covnersation in it at all .... took him out in Candice's MPi after and although she's a little slower (supprisingly not much .... think his tuning is way off) he couldn't believe how nice the MPi is to be in compared to his car ....... worth bearing in mind if a daily driver.

I took all my SC stuff out of my car, turned the boost down to make sure it lasted and fitted loads of sound proofing ..... in the end the only option was to rip out the turbo lump and go for a nice quiet NA lump when I had to use the car as a daily.

If it's not a daily then go for a full SC set-up as it'll last well in most motors and does sound the biz for 15 mins of track time .... so long as you have an hour between runs to recover your sense of hearing *wink*

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

TBH I really don't or should I say didn't (still yet to drive without sound deadening) mind driving with SC drops and box, when your cruisinng along I found road noise louder than the gears!
