I'm rebuilding a Mpi gearbox at the moment. When I removed the primary gear I found the lip that's just outside the teeth to be lose. I think this goes against theprimary gear seal, doesn't it?

Have you found this to be loose anytime? What are the consequenses?

It's an oil thrower to stop the oil getting thrown towards the seal, all mine are tight but it don't appear to be part of the primary gear so is proberly a press fit on. I don't think I have one on the s/c set in the car.

I think he means the steel oil thrower ring,

is there room to spot it with a couple of tiny dabs of weld?

Yes, it's probably an oil thrower. Makes sense though. Yes, it's loose, and there's no way in hell that it can be welded.

Interesting

http://www.calverst.com/articles/Gearbox-P...sh_problems.htm

quote:

The deteriorated bush can also move outwards, jamming the primary gear between the retaining clips and the thrust washer and crank shoulder. This is why gear selection becomes difficult/impossible. The primary gear won’t disengage drive from the engine, and is the main reason why the rear bush gets it’s thrust lip broken off.
