ok then here we go

i have rebuilt the engine from scratch had it overbored etc
(it might be relevant i supose)

jus plumbed it all in with cossie intercooler, mpi fuel tank, 8mm fuel lines,
the engine turns over fine, and the oil pressure light goes out.
ive set the fuel pressure to 3.5psi (using a gunsons on the end of the pipe), the plugs are sparking and the piston in the carb is free.

its just not fireing!

on the carb ive blanked off the anti run pipe, and linked the other two together,
when removing the spark plugs they are as dry as a bone no sign of petrol

that is the extent of my knowledge, now im just stuck

any help would be hotthanks alot lil stu

Are you sure you have the carb connections all correct as a starter for 10?

If you are happy these are right my next move would be to give it a sniff of easy start and see if that encourages it at all.

How have you set the distributor? My usual method to get them going is to just swing the dizzy whilst cranking until it starts to catch.

The easy start will let you eliminate if its fuel or not. If it fires up on easy start then you need to look at the carb/fuel side.

If its no different then its an ignition problem, if swinging the dizzy made a more promising sound I'd try that some more personally.

got the plug leads on the right way?

after all these years you'd think i'd remember what way the dizzy spins....

Hi,
Get a very small amount of petrol and poor down the intake of the carb whilst cranking.
If that don't get it to fire nothing will.
Only use this method if you've got no Easy Start. *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Have flame retardant gloves and a fire extinguisher to hand if you do this, ask Turbo Dave.......

Hi,
That's why I said a very small amount, that way it's a smaller fire to put out *wink*
Isn't easy start a lot more volatile than petrol though?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

It flashes at a lower temp, however it also evaporates quickly too! Although when getting th DON running I lost all the hair off my arm due to a spitback!

Have you had the dizzy drive out? If so it could be 180 deg out.

Are you sure its not 180 out? just because it is at TDC when the rotor points at No 1 isn't enough...Take the plugs out, stickyour finger over the No 1 hole and get it onto the compression stroke, when it is it will blow air....
Then whip off the distributor cap and make sure the rotor is pointing at the No 1 lead..

Could also check for compression stroke by getting rocker cover off and looking for when both valves are shut.

Yes the drive only goes one way, do you have it the correct way?

Yea-- but sticking your finger in a hole is much more satisfying...
but Toms way is probably easier..

I thought there was a few different positions and in the manual there's procedure for drive installation with number 1 at TDC the large side of the slot is at 9 o'clock or something like that.

stowmaket suffolk

easy way for a+ dizzy is to put no one at tdc( use the timing mark and make sure you are rotating then engine the right way and the inlet has just closed).

fit dizzy drive in so it sits at 1 oclock ( thats the wider section)

then fir dizzy so amplifier is plump in the middle of the clamp.

bingo she will fire first hit if thats the problem.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

right bit of an update,

i checked the timing seems fine,
so i guess its not gettin the fuel as it doesnt even smell of it.

i removed the carb and found the gasket between the carb and plenum has blocked off what looks like a breather hole to the float chamber so im gonna sort that tomorrow and see what happens

does that sound like a realistic reason????

Check you have no bends kinks in your fuel pipes, I know it might sound daft but also check you have the pipes the rigth way round on the tank.

Looking at those pictures I would say the wider section is at 10 o-clock.EDIT-looked at haynes and it looks correct-- But no matter as long as you have the #1 lead connected to the cap at connector nearest the vacume cannistor.

On the fuel, whip off the top of the carb and look into the jet with a torch, (not a match!!) you should be able to see the level of the fuel, sometimes helps to shake the car a bit.
