I've got a set of alloy minisport calipers off an old flame I bought to put on my clubby estate. I fitted them at the weekend and tried in vain to get the bleed nipples to open but you can guess that no matter how much WD40 and heat I put into them, they ended up shearing.

A local machine shop is trying to get them out for me (at great expense!) at the moment. Providings this is successful, any suggestions to ensure I don't have the same problem again?

cheers

Rob

I have to agree .. keep disturbing them (every 6 months or so) ... that is all that has worked for me in the past. A Pain I know but it is a 100% method of keeping them free.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Perhaps a trace of copper slip on the threads ???? to stop the mild steel nipples fusing to the alloy ?

I had a crome alloy mtb frame that meterlugically bonded itself to the alloy seat post.......

BTW - I took my buddy VTEC Pete out for a spin this weekend, and even though I am running her in, he gave it a name, the "Brocket"...cause I'm a brocket maaannn, nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah....

I bought them as is so no idea what was done with them by the previous owner. Apparenty the nipples are hardened which is making it harder to get them out apparently - well that was the excuse for phoning me yesterday and telling me it was going to cost more to sort!

I wont repeat his comments on the 'engineering'

Somewhere around Swindon

i thought the nipples were steel and the calipers being made of alloy that they tend to sieze in? minisport calipers had a poor rep for a long time due to shit dust seals there was even a website dedicated to slating them at one point, i think that issue has been sorted now though

Cheers Nic - any idea where I can get some?

Got the calipers back yesterday - hopefully they are ok now but I've now not a very small crack in the casting next to one of the nipples. Given the way the unit is cast in the position I don't think it will be an issue. They had better be as I've just blown 91% of the budget for the whole car on them!

Its that unrealistic thing you set yourself, half heartedly believing you will actually stick to it! I'm at least 3 times over what I planned on spending.

or alternatively you could get a weak thread lock and put it on the threads

this is actually probably a better option than the duralac

machinist read the riot act so to speak when i took them in that they wouldn't be held responsible for any damage as a result and it was my risk.

as for the budget, the car is just a budget hack to have some fun in. I got it free off a mate, bought a scrapper doner for £100, new set of tyres and a few odds and sods - hoping to get it on the road all in including insurance for no more than £500 - will let you know how i get on!
