Turbo Dave was egging me on so I decided to install the IC. I earlier decided on a side mount for neatness and used a Mitsubishi IC.

Now its running I'm quite surprised at how much extra fuelling it needs on boost now, no boost change yet but I guess the cooler air is more dense so more fuel is needed. Before I was seeing >70 degrees now its in the 30's ---quite a difference though the bonnet is still off. I'm half way through polishing up a new needle from scratch so as I can keep my old (non intercooler) needle in reserve and when thats in the right area I'll try upping the boost...

Very neat install, nice to see it's made a good difference to intake temps.

As others have said make sure it's got plenty of air flow, wouldn't hurt making up a simple duct from behind the grill to feed it either.

I got the needle profile in the ballpark and replaced the grille and bonnet and the intake temps are a little higher, around 35 and peaked at 40 degrees during 2 quarter mile runs, still not bad on a 25 degree day especially when the thing used to run into the 70 degree limit of my sensor as soon as I hit any boost!

Intercooler alone took 0.2s off the 0-60 (7.72s) and got the 1/4 mile down below 16 (15.82@92mph)


One thing I did hit when profiling the needle was a leanoff at 3000 rpm but only when the throttle was fed in slowly.. Ok on cruise and OK on WOT ..strange.. and I could not work out which spot on the needle to work. In the end I remembered a similar problem I had at lower rpm which I fixed by advancing faster off boost and then realised that it only started when the boost came in so I added some advance on boost and it fixed it..Note to self--- leanouts can also be caused by not advancing enough..

I am now looking into the engine and wondering whether deflectors etc will make much difference, theres not a lot of places for the air to go in there!! maybe play with that another day.

that is a nice fit. My body is from an MPI so have cut out a big section of the side of the engine bay and replaced with a grill type mesh which has created good airflow to the rad. This would work very well on with your intercooler too.
I am also trying to find a smaller intercooler to side mount just like this and will be doing the same. Currently i have a top mounted cooler with a bulge Bonnet but i hate the look of it.
