I've been backing up 11gb of pictures, video etc. tonight, and I got wondering how often people think of doing backups on their home PC's.

How much hassle would it be if you lost all the stuff you've accumulated over the months/years?

Go on - do a backup :)

Is this some sort of hint to the fact that now everyone has opend your topic and unwittingly downloaded a timbomb trojan virus you have created that wipes the hard drive?*tongue*

I have 3 years worth of PhD research on my laptop. Yesterday the fire alram went off when I was out anyway so I came back and couldn't get in. My PhD! If there was a fire (there nearly was) I would be through those windows so fast to get my laptop. It's all backed up now though!

I dont trust USB Sticks for backups - had too many break in the past.

My backups are done on external HDDs and via syncing with other PCs around the house, usually got more than 1 copy of everything. Only thing I dont backup is my photography, because its fookin' huge. (average of 2-3.5gb per event)

If you want to get really technical you should have your backups in a different building(garage or shed) in case of a fire.

I'm trying to pursuade Axel to buy one of these http://www.tranquilpc-shop.co.uk/acatalog/T7-HSA.html and then have that backup to our existing nas box. We originally had a linux box with everything on but using the nas is a bit more green.

Good idea though. The other advantage is that we should be able to access it over a VPN.

Dont just backup.

For basic stuff, do a Windows File transfer thingy, as if you were transferring to a new computer.

That will cover most things in the event of a new computer or install, and restore the computer to the same sort of layout you had previously.

Or better still, get some software like Acronis, and do a full clone of your main C Drive.
And keep a regular monthly clone going.

That way if anything happened and you needed a new drive, you just transfer the clone to the new drive and again, the computer will be 100% as you had been using it.

Storage these days is dirt cheap, even a 3TB NAS drive is well under £100

Also worth backing up Windows Live Mail if you use that email client on the computer. The actual folder where it stores everything, not just the file transfer thingy
