Ok fitted some hi lo's to a g reg mini and i cant get the passenger side to lower ? Am using new lowerd type gaz shocks on front and using the donuts off the car, the hi lo is wound right in on passenger side yet i can get 4 fingers in between tyre and body but on drivers side the hi lo is wound half out and i got 2 and half finger gap neither side is resting on the bump stops and i get full travel on the damper ? Is there an easier way mf doing this ?

If they are old cones they may have deteriated to different levels. Also old cones can have a habbit of not going fully home on the seat on the HiLos as it's a larger diameter than the trumpets they came off.

All worth a check.

If none of theat checks out then try swaping left and right assemblies over and see if the problem stays on the current side or swaps. If it stays have a look at the subframe itself.

yeah thats what i thought when i had it up on the jack :( hence cutting corners and leaving them in !

and next question, is there a equation / ratio for the length of the trumpet, to work out the ride height of the car, or do i continue to cowboy it and eye ball the job ?

It's approx 3:1

Best thing to do is get it all together and then set it roughly by eye. Drive the car about for a week or so and it will settle. Measure the ride height from floor to front edge of the straight section of the sill seam and set left and right equal. Drive it around for a little while longer and then get it set up properly by somebody with corner weight gauges.

Richie, I was working on a pair of Hi-Lo's yesterday. They were corroded to the rubber donuts, finally got them free and I have dismantled the units for a re furb.
Just measured the thread pitch and as near as my calipers can measure the thread pitch is 0.100".
Given that the leverage ratio for front and rear is 3:1 and 5:1 respectivley. One turn on the front is 0.300" change of ride height and 0.500" for the rear.
I understand that the front Hydro arms have a different ratio but I don't know what it is. Perhaps someone can fill in the blanks.
In view of the fact that the donut and HiLo had corroded together quite badly I would suggest you re assemble with plenty of Copperslip.
If you could not balance the ride height with the full range of adjustment it would suggest that the donut was not properly seated in the subframe tower.
It might also be worth checking the dimensions of the parts ie front and rear trumpet depth and also the strut length on the rear. I found a 0.150" difference on the rear struts and a smaller but significat variation in trumpet heights.
If there was not sufficient adjustment to level the car there must be something seriously wrong.
Regards
Dave

My money is on the knuckle joints TBH, seen this many times, the gaiter splits or pops off allowing shite in, then the joint wears out rapidly.

the plastic cups on the top arms Tom? Dan, i did copperslip the shit out of em to make sure they didnt bond up etc etc. before we started the stock trumpets were fitted and there was a clear drop on the drivers side, reckon i will get some plastic cups for the top arms (cant be expensive) then change the donuts and see where we go.

cheers folks

Richie

Well if it was down before you started then it's the cups (in the top arms yes). IIRC there are two types of knuckle joints (or maybe some are non-genuine) giving different heights. I know the ones I put in made the car waaaay higher than the ones that came out.

What has Richie done to upset your car?????? *wink*

There are definately at least two lengths of knuckle as the MPi cars had a much thicker (maybe and extra 3mm or so) shoulder than the older type.

If anybody knows where I can get a pair of the MPi type from please let me know as I can't locate anybody with them in stock!

There is a spacer that goes between the knuckle and the trumpet that lifts the suspension an inch (on the front) possibly making it the same as an "MPi KNuckle joint"? Can't find it now that I am looking for it though.

Jay, seen the spacers but on Candice's MPi it is in the shoulder, not a spacer.

Might just turn up a couple of spacers to give the desired ride height. Sooooo busy at the moment though the right parts would have been prefered.

Yes but I think that is different again from the MPi one.

Tuk Tuk got it sortid, a couple of lads got it on the ramps and noticed that one hi lo had come out of alignment DOE, would seem i was the butt of their jokes :) the car still needs leveling Tom showed me it was still slightly lower on the drivers side. but at least its 99% sortid.
