Hi,
My new winter run about Escort 1.4 CVH EFi has failed the MOT on emissions. It only fails on CO% @ 0.6, with a maximum allowed of 0.3. HC(60ppm) and lambda pass ok(0.98).
My local rolling road guy says the cat is knackered, but it looks quiet new.
I've dosed it with cataclean, howled it up and down the motorway, but it failed again today :(
It's been recently serviced and the lambda sensor has been changed too.
Tested lambda, seems ok, switching between 0.2 and 0.7. Disconnect the lambda and the injector duartion goes up 1 mS, which is what my tester says it should do...

Any ideas?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Hi,
That's no good, that'll nearly double the cost of my car!

Try changing out the coolant and air temp sensors first, they're not expensive

Other than that it could well be the cat. You can get cheepo cheepo universal jobbies on eBay for about £30, whether they are of any use i dont know

Maybe the head needs the valves recutting?

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Hi,
New cat fitted, just got back from doing it. The removed one was date stamped 0106.
Which now worries me as to why it's fubar'd to start with!
Despite having put the cat cleaner chemical through it it still looked sooty in there.
I imagine the one coming off was a cheepo one as the monolith looked like a stainless steel pan scourer!
Car only did 3000 miles last year, could that be why?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Hi,
That's the problem. The only thing I know about what was done to it before I got the car, was that all the wheel nuts were on the wrong way round! *surprised*
Cheers,
Gavin :)
