I'm looking at trying to get a bit more out of my audi oil burner and have been looking at some of the 'remapping' upgrades available. The options are for a plug in and re-map or for a rolling road based re-map.

Genaral performance figures quoted are about the same although i'm a bit scepticle of the ones without a rolling road session (albeit they are cheaper).

Anyone had any experience/ knowledge they would like to share?

Rob

A mate of mine bought one of them 'tuning boxes' for his Seat and has made a noticeable difference.

The box plugs in between the fuel pressure sensor on the fuel rail and ECU.

On the advert for them it said you get better fuel economy, but this is only apparent as I assume that box friggs the ECU into thinking the fuel pressure is lower than it actually is giving the impression less fuel is being used.

Im not sure how well it would work long term as im sure the O2 sensor would read rich and compensate for it?

I've been offered a system by the local audi specialist that re-maps the ecu as opposed to the plug in box - don't even want to begin how it all works!

Hi,
I know you can chip one of the Golf TDi's to get the same torque as a Porsche Boxter!

from what i have read, it is better to get a rolling road remap, then you can get it tuned exactly how you want, its supposed to be kinder to the clutch too.
by the way bat, i recently got a fabia vRS 1.9tdi as my new daily drive, torque output is 310nm, porsche boxter has 260nm, the boxter s has 305nm. thats as standard too.
yeah it doesn't really mean anything out on the road but it sounds good lol!

Hi,
My information is about 2 years old, so
I guess you can now get it as standard *surprised*
Cheers,

Is that right about the torque? My 10 year old Audi Estate also has 310Nm......

Find a superchips modem dealer .... don't use anybody elses .. trust me!!!

When I had the head gasket fail on mine I changed the cam, injector nozzles and turbo and had it remapped ... I say the torque figure is "adequate" .... in much the same way as that in the latest Rolls Royce is "adequate".

Some of the plug in boxes are wank, some will kill your engine but there are one or two that do work. Never be as good as an actual remap though.

Those BMW motors are very good indeed. I will always prefer the way the VW lumps deliver their power but no arguments the Bimmer motors are sweet.

FFS BMW, Skoda, Audi all mentioned in one thread - time to lock it I reckon.

Haha, Yay! I feel the same way but I know if I lived with one for a week I would change my mind. Just don't like the laaaag then the whomph of torque. Oh and the noise.

Jay #2 ..... no lag on mine and it has a bigger than standard turbo! Just need to lear to drive them properly, same as any other engine type!!!!

Tom, yours is a 2.5 isn't it? Thnk most of the posts are relating to the 1.9 / 2.0 TDis like mine. Those 2.5s are really nice to drive. I keep thinking about one but then my friend reminds me I get 10mpg more and now have the same torque!

Yes its a 2.5, I've driven chipped 1.9's with supposedly the same power/torque as my car has but would keep mine over any I have tried, its much much smoother and quieter.

Both the Civic 140ps diesel and the seat 130 that I drove had lag but that really isn't a problem if the torque held on enough. My clio is more limp than them low down but it makes up for it above 3000 rpm. As I say if I lived with a diesel for a while I know I would get used to it. Is the mpg as good as they say, ie 50ish for the Golf/SEAT 130 TDi?

MPG for the 4 pot should be around 45-50. 6 pot is a good bit less but you start getting into the performance economy equation.

the upgrade i've been offered will give an extra 30-40bhp and the torque jumps from 370 to 420Nm.

what have you done to your tdi then rog? And what did it start life as?

RogerM

Started life as a 110 TDi S

First thing was the SuperChip (Modem dealer one) that gave 142 and 308NM with a decent panel filter. It should have been slightly less but that is what it said on Allard's rollers.

Turbo became a little smokey so it was changed out with an upgrade and a remap 154bhp and 328NM.

I then was unlucky enough to have only the second porous block that VW have had reported so we came to an agreement and they paid for parts and I paid the labour (Stonehouse VW Audi Centre is just around the corner from where I work and they build some of the quickest diesels in the VW cup championship).
The head was swapped for one of a racer, turbo was upgraded again, different cam and injector nozzles changed. Again a remap at Allard's to suit and 168bhp and 347NM on one setting and 150 and 331 on slightly less boost (worried about the overboost sol on the fuel pump as I'd alread been through one!)

The thing is that now it's dangerously, to the licence, tourquey. You even have to be careful with a fully loaded car trailer on the back to keep it to legal speeds as it tends to creep up without you noticing, mainly due to the very tall gearing meaning that not many extra revs = several extra mph.

Tom is right though, you can really hear the turbo in mine and it's nowhere near as smooth as a V6 diesel like Toms.

Thing is that driven properly there is no need to jump on it, ever, and you can get 50+mpg (unless it would seem your Candice) no problem at all.

Best thing about it though is that it's dented, has a few rust stone chips, steel wheels with hubcaps and an interior that looks like a dog rebuilt an engine in it (he tried but had trouble holding the torque wrench with no opposable claws!!!). Means nobody expects the spanking they are about to be dealt!!! A mate borrowed it and I turned it up to the top boost and off he went ...... when he brought it back he said it was silly and that his turbo'd Mk2 16V golf was a snail in comparison.

Now the Golf would crush it in a straight drag but once it's moving the torque makes the in gear accelleration very good indeed!

Why you sak Ric, you a VW oil burner fan too?

I always heard that the 4 pot was a better drivers unit - I like the sleeper look as well. While I like what I've got, the V6 is a thirsty, lazy big thing

Rob,

get is SuperChipped and it'll feel a whole load nicer.

I didn't mean to do anything to mine when I bought it but unfortunately the VW specialist I use builds race cars ..... you leave them the car to read a fault code and you get it back with a different turbo!!!!

sounds good, is it a mk3 or mk4? and as it started as a 110 its non pd i take it...

yup, i have a mk4 tdi 130. Cracking car, but never going to set my pants alight. Have been thinking about having a chat with allard to see what can be done. But it makes more sense to save the cash for a fun second car (once the mini is done obv.)

It's a B5 (mk5 B chassis) Passat Estate.

Your correct it's a 98 and Pd's didn't come along until 2000. It took ages to find a decent, low milage, 1 owner B5 passat with the rotary pump fuel system. Wanted that specifically due to it being about 8% better on fuel than the PDs due to it being an emisson break point previous and thus not wasting a shed load of juice trying to be green ........ after all if I'd have wanted a green car why did I buy a burgendy one?
