Hi all,

am now about to remove my old engine from my mini, but was just wondering if anyone had any tips for removing the pin that holds the gear selector rod onto the gearbox??

must have been trying to get the little bugger out for about an hour last night before finally giving up, it just wouldnt budge!

will be having another go at it tonight but was just wondering if i was doing anything wrong or anyone had any nifty trick for getting it out?

thanks *wink*

I bet my first wank came quicker than your first mini turbo

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Put it in reverse, and go and buy a proper punch. Then get the car nice and high up (on stands) so you can get under and have a good swing with a hammer.

Then hit it, and I mean don't just tap it, give it a pisser, and it will come out.

They can be awkward yes, make your life easier by getting the car nice and high to give you room to swing at it.

You can remove either of the pins, doesn't really make any difference, I have always done the one nearest the g/box though as this seems to make it easier when putting it back in.

Second that ^^^^

Also use a punch the closest size you can to the pin, if the punch is to small it will tend to want to go trough the pin than push it and only ends up making it tighter. *wink*

I usually do the one closest to the box as the bit your hitting doesnt move around.

hehe, until i bought a punch i used to try using a drill bit! What a crap idea that was.

get the propper punch and it will fall out with a few reasonable taps of the hammer. if you use a drill bit, centre punch or wrong size drift you will fight for hours

What size punch is correct? 5mm must be close but I assume an imperial size is better?

i found one of those tiny little screwdrivers (for watches i think) fits perfectly. The actual screwdriver bit goes through but the metal scroud is bang on the right diameter, couple of taps avec hammer and bingo.

Hi,
I always give it a smack with the hammer first, before using a punch.
Seems to make it a lot easier *wink*

i used a 6 inch nail field down slightly worked a treat.

getting them back in is harder i find, but once its all lined up it slips stright in!

why didnt they just have a bolt there instead of a pin?? it would make life much easyer!

beacause a 5mm caphead and nylock will wear down after a while and your gearchange will get a bit difficult...ask me how i know, lol.

I change it every time the engine comes out now to be safe.
