hi, i bought an allegro engine/box for a mini. does anyone know if the gear ratios in the box wil be too low for use in a mini? some random guy has emailed me asking to have the gearbox as the top end will only be 50mph in a mini, then asking to buy the box. seemes a stupid claim to me, thought id check though.

pretty sure the allegro's do have a high final drive in them, 3.7 or 3.9 maybe?

if I recall right the 1100 had a 4.1 final drive and the 1275 had a 3.9

Don't think there ever was an A-series with anything lower than 3.9 fitted.

But yes, it will have a 3.9 in it. Too low for a road going Mini.

4.somthing rings a bell with me,

the maths seems to suggest this too if you assume 165/80/13's

I once had a 3.9 diff in my road mini clubman estate, it was by accident rather than on purpose, top speed about 75mph....

Hi,
I had an 1100 allegro engine and box in a mini once.
1st is used for spinning tyres, second used to pull away and as Tom says about 70 flat out !
Cheers,
Gavin :)

it will be fine on 13's if you want acceleration at the expense of top end speed. If you are looking for something a bit more friendly for motorways etc then change the diff for something higher.

I ran a 3.7 in an MG engine with a kent 286 with 12's and it was fine but I was just bodding about town.

Acceleration with a 3,9 and std gearbox will NOT be good. The reason is that you empty 1st so early. I bet 0-60 is faster in 2nd with a little clutch slip.

agreed if you are accelerating form a standing start but on the road, most of the driving will be in 3rd & 4th
