sorry this might go on a bit but all information could help determain the problem...

it is a standard metro turbo engine before we start..

on wednesday morning the car stalled when i got to some traffic light and would not fire again, after a lot bit of messing around with the RAC man we changed the coil and it fired straight away..

on friday evening i AHEM 'drove along side' an impreza for some distance after leaving the car to cool down properly before turning it off i returned to try and start it 10 minutes later and it wouldent fire again.. rang RAC as i couldent find any problems, whilst waiting it started 20 mins later having done nothing to it..

it has now developed a problem that has come and gone for a while with a verry rough idle and verry down on power/struggles to even raise the revs.

i have my fuel pump on a seperate switch and when i ran it wil the switch iff for a minute it started to run perfectly...turn it back on and it struggled again. it runs rough for about 40 seconds with the pump off then sorts istelf off, but as soon as you put it back on again its juddering.

my best guess is the fuel pressure regulator, can you change the diaphragm on its own? is it worth checking the condition of it as i dont have a spare regulator to try... any other thoughts?

i am sorry this thread has gone on a bit but it might all be relevent... any help would be appriciated!.

thanks. Dan

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

i'm thinking amp on the dizzy.

or dodgy feed to the coil... the pump could pull the battery down or something, or the connection may be common somewhere.

or could just be fuel leaking past the float needle causing it to flood hence why it runs ok with out the pump on

Hi,
Hoggy raises a good point.
Any little chuffs of black smoke out the back when it's running rough?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

think there is more smoke bat but its always dark when i drive it now so i cant really see what colour..

iain it takes a while for it to run right with after i turn the pump off, its kind of just before it runs out of fuel in the lines so i dont think its an ignition problem..

benross do you have a regulator spare i could come and collect for cash?
i dont expect a guarantee with it or anything i wont come back to you if it does'nt work lol.

thanks. Dan

Hi,
Get it sorted sharpish, or you'll be rebuilding the engine too!
Check for petrol smell in the oil!
Cheers,
Gavin :)

tack off dash pot then switch ign on, any fuel coming out of the main jet means fuel getting past needle valve.

also check the float as i had trouble with mine this year as it filled up with fuel.

bat why will it cost the engine?? what am i missing just because its running too rich?

i ran it yesterday in the light and can confirm that there is black smoke there when its playing up..

the problem comes and goes tho, it it driving fine right now but i know it will come back its so strange... will try that with the dash pot off...

thanks. Dan

If it runs rich for too long it will wash the lubricating oil off the bores, and then the rings will wear and not seal so well, hence you'll lose compression.....
