After reading Wil's thread on cold weather gains

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=185232

I got thinking about cool cans and a quick read of the yellow book told me little more than I already know.

So the million pound question is a follows, is anyone running one or has anyone run one in the past?

Obviously they'd be totally impractical in a road car and a PITA in a track car but for speed events (which seems to be the main for of competition TM members take part in) they could have some benefits, providing that McLaren don't object :)

Hi,
There's been talk of such things in the past, but that member left quite a while back....

Depending on how well you could vent the rad would govern how cool you can get the water? Cant see it being super cool.

Searching didn't bring up any thing, so it looks like I may just have to go for it and see.

I'm guessing that I'd have to put the can between the regulator & the carb other wise I'll end up trying to call the entire tank, that said I'll be running a swirl pot so I should be circulation the whole tank through it on regular basis.

Also any ideas as to the effect it may or may not have on carb icing?

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

My dad used one on his drag car long ago. I've done the calculations though, and it isn't worth the trouble. The reason is that the mass of air is so much greater than the mass of fuel. You have no leverage on mixture temperature from cooling the fuel. Say you are able to achieve a 40C reduction in fuel temperature, which would be outstanding. Since the fuel is only about 1/13 of the total mixture mass, you've cooled the mixture about 3C! Looks cool but the gains would be miniscule.

Big cooling comes from evaporation - this employs the heat of vaporization. This is part of why using excess fuel suppresses detonation up to a point. To get more of this effect, people use water/methanol injection. It's considered an evil bodge on this site, but it does cool the mixture and suppress detonation very effectively.
