Right, in the interests of light weight performance ( Not in the quest for true CHAV status ).

But, your thoughts on the use of a carbon / titanium bike silencer to create a light weight exhaust system.

Mounted in the correct position, (same as the original system). The car has no rear valance so I can mount it nice and high and out of the way.

So, Will it be of benefit to construct said system. Or, will it be a waste of time and effort for very little gain.

You’re thoughts please.

Si

P.S. for use with a highly strung N/A engine.

No power gain. Insignificant weight savings. Might sound good though.

It depends on what material you construct the rest of the exhaust from? A thin gauge stainless pipe or titanium pipe like i have for my k engine should see a few kilos saved. It depends on the noise levels obviously as to the silencer required.

At present I have a Maniflow Large Bore 3>1 manifold.

And, as you suggest for the rest of the system it would be constructed of thin stainless upto the rear silencer.

Would a carbon rear silencer last, or would the high compression blow it to bits, making a titanium silencer a better option?

you only have to think of the conditions in which a bike exhaust is, with a high compression ratio and short primary pipes so i wouldn't think that heat or conditions should be a problem.

Fit a reverse megaphone system from Maniflow. Its heavier but does show a horsepower gain on my engine which is worth more than the small weight loss.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

the titanium gp rear silencer on my car weighs 1 kg - noise levels are ok - it is the only silencer in the system and does not hinder power!

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

Paul - Hp is good..! but is that the all you have in your system ? e.g. no rear silencer only megaphone?

johnK- Titanium rear silencer gets my vote as well. And thanks for confirming no hp loss.

Cheers Antman my thoughts exactly.

The DON has a bike silencer as the only silencer in the system, as Castle Combe proved, its far too loud to pass any kind of noise test, for what it does on the drag strip its no problem, but no good for circuit use.

There is no such thing as 'insignificant weight saving', it all adds up.

I suppose I think in terms of road cars. So long as I have a full interior and a spare tire, I can't think of saving a kilo on muffler weight as significant.

Hi,
They do bike silencers now with a removeable baffle. Baffle in 98dB, battle out, nice *wink*

fortfun - you have it the wrong way round - the bike silencer weighs 1kg - not saves 1kg - it saves a heck of a lot morethan 1kg!!

I have a glasspack on my car - about 15 inches of 3-inch stainless tubing with some fiberglass packing in it. Doubt that weighs much either, and it was only $80 welding included.
I've got nothing against bike mufflers, but as an engineer and natural tightwad I'm always looking to optimize return for money invested.
