I am trying to get the engine to turn over to get to oil around before firing up off the starter motor.

When turning the ignition key the starter motor spins but does not engage. I have checked and cleaned all the earths, i have put on a new solinoid and have had a spare stater motor and it still does the same. The battery is charged up.

On the solinoid i have the battery connected to the outside with and the starter on the inside closest to the body.

The engine turns freely by hand and i have had it running before i took it out and i have not touched the clutch.

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated. Thanks *wink*

Hi,
Cables are the wrong way round
Battery cable should be nearest the engine and the starter cable nearest the inner wing :)
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Hi,
Sorry read that wrong *blush*
Does the pinion turn freely on the bendix? By that I mean if you turn the pinion so it moves down the shaft does is spring back by itself?
I take it you've put the engine earth lead back on?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Hi,
Try connecting the battery straight to the starter with some jump leads.
Make sure it's in neutral though! *surprised*

Gavin :)

Hi,
If you've measured that across the battery itself, the battery is buggered! :(
Cheers,
Gavin :)

i have 12.45 at the solinoid i only get that once i turn the key. Doesn't the starter motor use loads of power, hence the drop in voltage???

Yes the starter will drop the battery voltage, but not that much.
