When i was at work today one turbo was compleatly seized

when it was taken apart for reconditioning it came quite obvious what it was

not too bad looking is it...its had some time being shotblasted and the shaft being polished

another view...the turbine blades look a bit chewed but not too deep at all and not bent, would clean up as its only for a low performance truck

but.....

now the problem comes very obvious ideed, the shaft obviously locates itself to where it was snapped, i had no idea they were hollow inside where the piston clip area is...doesnt really seam very safe

other than the exhaust turbine and shaft (which is a few hundred to replace) the centre body was scrap, the piston clip grove on the exhaust side was too damaged and would leak oil. the top plate was damaged where the piston clip sat, the thrust spacer was stuck on the shaft till it was hammered off, the inlet housing was scrap where the shaft wasnt being held correctly it had rubbed both the top plate and the housing damaging the compressor wheel aswell
the exhaust housing was scrap aswell exhaust turbine had been rattling about at one stage till it had wedged its self in place

needless to say that unit was Beyond ecconimicle repair it was a garrett T35 and this kinda thing happens alot with the Holset H2C's

also had a huge turbo which was from a fire engine truck at an airport, it was a garrett but a specialist couldnt even ID it bloody heavy aswell!

Hi,
Those airport fire trucks are seriously big. The exhaust is usually the same bore as a dustbin!!!!
Detroit diesel? The one I worked on was.

i managed to fit my hand right the way into the exhaust port....aaand i dont have small hands! people call me dustbin lid hands, rather kind of them
it was a perkins thing i think from some RAF place (might have been detriot diesel, some of the other stuff we have in is)

i usualy blast the turbos with compressed air i use the excuse of "im testing it spinds alright" but its not testing much can them to spin so fast n loud it hurts... other people we havly got any test equipment so its all done by trust and testing things individualy

obviously cant test things like bearings properly but given a wiggle test

alot of the problems on the turbos arent directly related to the turbo's, unfiltered oil wearing the bearing seats giving shaft area to move, catches the housing and snap! or no air filter used and again, snap or dirt into the piston ring grove wearing it out allowing oil into the inlet/exhaust. also a diesel engine will run on its own engine oil so if it start seaping past on the inlet side it wont be able to turn off untill sumps empty or engines stalled
also get alot of bodged up stuff that comes in, almost funny at times

Are the wheels friction welded to the shaft?

Looks like the weld has failed.

got another one.... a wee bit worse this time!!

can see where the shafts failed (they are friction welded by the way) which has then rounded completly
also can see the housing where its been battered about...must have been on the vehicle along time before then pulled it off, not like you wouldnt notice it ether!

i managed to pull this out the exhaust housing with out even removing bolts...kinda shows how buggered then blades are.
also see where the weld failed

the shape of it all now...well...its fucked beyond it! about good for scrap n thats it!
