Hi,
Use an acid etch primer. Tin of cellulose paint sould do the job. Failing that smooth hammerite, but that's not matt.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I would say you want satin black not matt black. Matt would be a nightmare. Wil sprayed a couple of parts of ours with a tin to good effect.

Is it not better to use a spray can? Would you get a decent enough finish with a brush?

lots of very thin coats with some sanding would give a good finish with a brush :)but if it is already inside the car spraying wont be so good

Spraying is not really an option as Im painting it in the kitchen, lol. Had concidered hammerite but was unsure if you can paint it on clean bare metal? Any other thoughts?

Hammerite is intended for bare metal...and you can get it in satin black.

But of late, Ive found Hammerite doesnt seem to stick too well. It chips off easily.

Might be better to thin it down too, might go on smoother ??

I have used hammerite thinners to thin down in the past and you do get a nice finish with it, have had problems covering "shiney" areas where the metal has been sanded/grinded tho, this is why I posted this thread.
