Hi,

Do i need to remove the engine to change the drive shalf seals. I think mine are leaking so i should replace them really but i don't fancy taking the engine out. I'm worried if i do i'll never get the time to put it back in! can they be changed by just taking the drive shafts out and then remove the covers and changed from under the car? I want to change the FD ratio but im pritty sure i need to take the engine out and the gear box off to do that.

Thanks
Alex

Drive shaft seals can be changed with the engine in the car after removing the drive shafts.
In actual fact you can do it without removing the side covers from the gearbox.

As for changing the final drive, I have seen people say that it is possible to change the CWP with the engine and box in the car if the diff housing is secured with bolts, not studs and nuts, however I've never done it personally, and imagine it would be pretty bloody awkward to do it well, especially in regards torquing up the mainshaft nut correctly and folding the locktab over neatly.

can the the FD gears be changed with out splitting the gear box from then engine? I know the diff will come out but can you get to the other gear easy enough though the diff hole?

I wouldnt have thought so, the speedo drive would have to come off, the gearbox would have to be locked up to remove the nut and that has tabs as well. Even then I cant see how you could swing a big enough wrench... Thats an engine out job if you want to do it right.

Having said that some pervert will have managed it!!

I once watched, and I have to admit laughed an awful lot....as a friend removed a Mini engine from his car, in the snow, with no lifting gear.

And yes.....I did say ONLY the engine !!!!!!

Absolute lunatic, Ive no idea what was going through his head. Well...aside from the fact the engine and box would defo have been too heavy !!!!! How the hell he managed to get it split in the car is still a mystery to me.

speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

But to change the FD you can do it with the engine on the box right?

Just its something i'm going to be doing this winter and ICBA with taking the engine off the box! ha ha!

if i do, then i'll have to do some lateral thinking... raise the rev limiter! *happy*

Hi,
Dropping the diff out without splitting the engine/box is no problem with the engine out. But I don't know how you can lock the box up to undo the pinion nut?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

not just lob it in first and lock the flywheel as per undoing the flywheel bolt?

yeah the pinion is the only bit thats got me thinking, surely it must be do-able?

Hi,
Ian .. That'll do it, so you'll just need a long extension bar to get through the speedo drive housing onto the pinion nut, oh and a long chisel for the lock tab *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

personally i'd always use 4th as then there is no load on the gears, only the main shaft, and drops.
