I think the clever german buggers linked the alarm into the OBD port, may be worth getting someone to plug a code reader in as it might be able to tell you what is setting it off.....

my ex company Mk4 golf had exactly the same problem. Local VW dealer 'fixed' it by unplugging the siren connection apparently. It useed to still go off - just didn't make any noise.

Sounds like you've hit on the fault to me Matt, check out the pin switch on the boot.

Perhaps the pin switch is on the locking mechanism itself....just a thought. On 19th Jan, 2010 wil_h said:

the switch is in the lock mechanism. Strip it out and clean everything up in the fist instance |

Right the passat is sorted, (well I hope) as I said earlier my thoughts turned to the boot catch. I looks like the plug with the wires joining it to the catch sensor was all summed up and looked like it had water in! when I removed it (after turning the ignition on) the warming light on the dash went out! After cleaning it up and putting some copper grease on it. the light stayed out when the door was closed, the alarms been on all day and so far hasn't gone off.
