Interesting rant from Alex in PPC this month, in the letters section. Managed a good plug for turbominis though.

They want to use an SU on the roller to turbo it. They have come up with some crazy system so Alex put them straight on using a propper turbo SU.

Yes the Jan issue.

Turbocharging the roller

In PPC's December issue the article about turboing the Roller is yet again banging on about what a great idea Charlie Broomfield had to use the SU carbs. It then goes into some fair detail about the technicals of it all.

My problem with this is that you are a few years too late. BL had turbos and SUs years ago! Think Metro, Meastro and Montego of the MG Turbo variety... There are still people mucking around with these - check out turbominis.co.uk)

If BL went to the effort of developing turbo versions of the SU, why not just bolt two of them onto your roler and job done? They come with a plenum, sealed throttle butterfly spindle and internal drillings to pressurise the float chamber.

We know Alex, but if we'd used the Metro carbs we'd probably have needed 8 of them. And they're not easy to get these days - WH.

I thought they were making a big issue about having fitted Megasquirt to this abortion.
Why not use throttle bodies?
this would fit in with their phiosophy of merging old and new technologies.
The car is a pile o shite anyway, a standard998 mini would beat it round any hill/sprint venue

Apparently a 1.75" carb flows 200cfm according to my SU book. Maybe a little different on an SU due to the piston edge being in the airflow and may also be different in forced induction aplications.

im quite sure its not megasquirt, but there own ecu that uses alot of bits n bobs from megasquirt. certailnly i remember it beign described as "our own DIY injection system" with a screenshot of megatune..

but aye, they should be going efi anyways.

The SUs are a stop gap...

They were using "digegrsquirt" a bastardised version of MS, but in the end have opted for Dave Walker's Emerald.
