Not really, K&N are a world leader in the field for the simple reason that they work.

the only thing with those K&N's is that they are not in cold air.

The filter is fine flow wise but some improvments can be made with piping to the front of the car. i believe quite a few mini specialsts to a cold induction pipe type thing with a K&N on the end that goes to the front grill.

I read an article on all different filter mediums.

The oiled cotten gauze (K&N type) came out top. The foam type filters did not actually filter particularly well.

Hi,
Can't beat a K&N, it does the job and lasts for years when cleaned with the proper stuff.
Bikes are a different matter, BMC race filters are better, but they're still the same material :)

Gavin :)

KC did an article on K&N cone vs K&N in a standard but modified filter case. The modified case flowed better, was easier to duct cold air to and was quieter. I think he drilled 4-5 half inch holes on the underside of the case. Cotton gauze are way better than foam when it comes to filtration and durability.

I'm using a replacement K&N filter in the standard case. Proven to flow better than a cone filter.

Apparently anything with a metal lid that is opposite the mouth of the carb isn't the best due to reflecting pulses back into the inlet track. Maybe the 90 degree bend at the mouth of the carb isn't a bad idea after all.

I used to use a MG Metro filter box with a K&N element on my old 1293 NA mini, a lot quieter than a cone filter, and no difference in performance either. The MG Metro style filter box (also fitted to carb coopers I believe? rectangular intake, points towards the NSF of the engine bay) is supposed to flow a lot better than the earlier mini box.

currently i have a mini airbox with a k@n filter and it works pritty well, i have drilled quite a few i think they were 6mm holes in the front of the airbox but i loved the whisel that you got from the k&n cone filter noise doesnt really bother me one bit as i love the sound of engines :$. but thanks for the tip on the pipercross ones. i was thinking about a ram pipe and a sock but i dont know how good they are

I suspect with the fuel adjusted to suit, a ram tube and sock would give better flow than a cone filter and loudest noise but foam socks have some pretty big pores!

It depends on the sock. My Pipper cross one was rubbish and my valve seats bear testiment to that! I think some foam setups are OK as the foam has a gradient in pore size with bigger on the outside and smaller ones as you move thought the filter. The ITGs that KC sells seam to not have the problem that K&N cones have and should still sound like a trumpet and sock it that's your thing. But I still like oiled cotton gauze.

Any sharp edge in the way of airflow will cause a whistle. My carb whistles on part throttle when the air filter is off due to the edge of the piston. Shouldn't be too hard to get a whistle out of a standard air box.
