hi,

i am upgrading my engine in around a month and will be running it with a single SU carb, untill i can afford to go turbo lol, my car has no bulkhead box. i am looking to maximise power from the engine, so need a good supply of cold air.
the engine bay will be fairly roomy as it is a track car and unneccesary things are being removed, such as heater bits and the brake servo will be going also.
the miglia way of doing this, as you may know is

these are apparently available from Myk Cable Developments, but i am assuming this would be out of my budget and i think it requires a bulkhead box and only for a weber, but if anybody can prove me wrong, please do.
another way i have seen

this is a turbo plenum with an air feed to the front
also, i may be having a front mount radiator, as miglia cars have these and an oil cooler will be fitted.
has anybody got or seen any good ideas? and even better, has anybody made or is able to make some kind of system?

thanks, aml :)

The turbo plenum is a neat way to do it. All you need then is a bit of flexi hose and a unversial K&N (which you could reuse on the turbo cnversion!)

i used the plastic air feed pipnig from unger the wing as a cold air feeds it worked ok but probably not as well as a front mount air filter or ram air box like the miglias.

thanks so far! can anybody, or know of someone who could make a custom plenum for my needs?
a bit like this, but could be in different material

then i could attach some hose with an inline enclosed air filter such as a BMC CDA, or cheaper version lol, then some ducting to an inlet duct mounted behind the front grille.
this may sound a bit extreme, but i really want max power out of the engine lol!

Hi,
Nic on here does some stainless plenums with the air inlet on the opposite side to the standard turbo one.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

The turbo plenum has a restrictor though so this would need to be a stub stack for NA applications.

Oh yeah, Vizard shows a nice set up in his book, no plenum but just a pipe that bolts to the carb mouth and a careful bend allowing the filter to be placed at the front of the engine bay.

A stub stack is like a really short trumpet at the mouth of the carb that has a neat radius that, in short, smooths airflow into the carb mouth. It's in the 3rd edition of Vizards book, page 57 onwards. The air filter setup that's in it is not longer available but it wouldn't be too hard to knock one up. And I am wrong, it has a plenum actually!

Hi,
The stub stack is basically a low profile ram pipe which goes on the inlet of the carb.
Certainly in the blue bible and under performance filtration in the yellow :)
Cheers,
Gavin :)
