Quick Question
Im just doing the rear shocks.
What torque should the top bolt be. or does it have to be so tight, as to make the rubbers compress just a little or alot. ?
Have a nice christmas.

Cheers lads..

As you are compressing a rubber bush when you tighten up the nuts I would question if it is actually possible to torque them to a precise value and even if you did would they remain torqued up over time.

In my opinion your best bet it to do them up tight.

Note that is purely my opinion, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi,
When I fitted my Gaz shocks I tightened them up as far as they'd go, which wasn't far.
Then I had to re-tighten them after a couple of weeks driving.
Easy to do on an estate though *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

When i tighten them up as tight as they can go.
The rubber compresses quite alot, where the rubber become's really flat. so like rob said, there should be a torque setting really.
Just seems unsafe to me, that it should be done up so it's only compressed so much. then it will become losser.
but tighting them up tight, which makes the rubbers flat. i would of thought that wasn't a good idea, as then the rubbers are not really doing there job..
They should of made the top part where the nut goes on longer,
So you can place another nut on.

Hi,
When I said as far as they would go, I should have mentioned without squashing the bushes flat! :$
Just wind them on till the thread just sticks out the top, then run for 2 weeks and tighten them down a bit more.
Once the nyloc bites on the thread, they won't come loose, just keep your ear out for knocking noises as the bushes bed in :)
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Also thinking about the loading on the shocks I would question if the top nut does anything other than stopping the shock falling off when the car is jacked up.

What do you guys reckon?

Hi,
As long as it's tight enough to keep the bushes compressed a little, so there's no slop when the shock bounces up and down.
Job done :)
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I think there is some element of pull on the thread as shocks have a rebound damping action.
