As title my home internet is really pissing me off.

I have Virgin b/band, with a Linksys router, and Linksys PCMCIA card wireless adaptor oobie-doobie for my laptop.
However it has started playing silly fuckers and won't connect. Much pissing about reinstalling drivers, turning things on and off and checking settings and still nothing.
I believe the problem to be that it is not getting assigned an IP address. It obtains this from somewhere (god knows where) using DHCP. But it is not obtaining one, and this seems to be why it won't connect. Am currently sat on the living room floor with it plugged into the b/band modem, this works OK.

Any suggestions before I take the router outside and smash the fuck out of it with a large hammer?

I'm fairly sure that the adaptor in the laptop works OK as I've connected to networks at Lisas house and also when away with work etc with it no problems.

Help!
Oh, and if I don't reply its because I can't get on't net! Sounds daft but these days rely on it for all sorts, finance, banking etc.

Virgin sounds like the problem - obtaining an IP is from your ISP, not your router.

Hi,
If it works via a network cable the problem is with the router.
When I used to get this problem I manually assigned an ip number and let it connect. (you won't get www with this) Then change back to DHCP again.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

is it just when wireless that you can't get a connection or when using the router all together?

if its when using the router all together does it give you an ip address(i think its an ip) to type into the http bar on internet explorer or firefox? should be something like 162.123.0.1 along those lines.

mine does this from time to time and i need to type this in and it takes me to the routers page and i need to re-enter my isp username and password again so it knows which ip address to use for your connection.

that all made sense in my head but only just so hope someone knows what i mean, if not i will try and explain it better.

James.

if you can, get in to your routers setup page, try 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1 aswell in an internet browser, once in there see if there is a way to assign the wireless card a static IP adress, there is plenty of guides for this sorta thing on google for specific devices. this will meen the laptp wont have to ask the routers own wee dhcp server for an ip adress each time it connects, itll just have its own address and thatll be that.

sorry tom jsut re-read your post, try get into the routers setup page and try and get it to refresh its dhcp settings. setting a static ip adress for each of your computers is a good idea though, but if it worked before when they were all leasing adresses then jsut ignore me and leave that ide of things alone :)

There are 2 DHCP's going on here, one between the broadband modem and the router and another between the router and computer.

The router may have forgotten the settings/passwords for the modem you would need to get into the router (preferably using a hardwire connection to it --hopefully you have one) using the router address given in its manual.

If your computer cannot connect to the router then it could just be the wireless side again thats why I would always buy a wireless router with hard connectors as well..

BTW I hope EVERYBODY here has made their wireless neworks secure... Turn broadcast off, turn passwords on... You dont want your neighborhood perv sitting on your nework downloading porn using your account do you?? even worse they could steal your porn right off your harddrive!!!

I am on my Third Linksys router in just over a year. Everytime it has been the wireless that has gone wrong on it. I only keep getting the same one as PC World are keep replacing it, might try something different when it goes wrong again.

Switch DHCP off and give all the computers/laptops static ip's. has worked for me for 5 years now.

If there is just one router then it wont be a problem with multiple DHCPs as there will only be one.

Restore the router to factory default and try everythig again

Hello again chaps,

thanks for all advice, I think its the DHCP bit that is screwing up, when it will not connect, when I look in the connection details it says invalid IP address and the IP is shown as 00.00.00 etc, as is default gateway etc.

How would I go about deciding what IP address to give it, e.g. what numbers?!
I am happy with the bit about plugging into the router to access its settings, did that when setting it up. Haven't tried connecting hard wired via it yet, at the moment have got laptop plugged direct to BB modem, this works fine.

Hi,
I've set my router DHCP address range to 10.0.0.2 to 10.0.0.250, then set laptop to anything in between say 10.0.0.50
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Well, went to PC world this morning, and bought a £30 "ZYXEL" router and USB thingy, just installed it all and it works great, the instructions were easy to follow, and it worked straight away as it said it should, something I could never say for the LinkSys piece of shit, that has never worked reliably from day one!

So it is sorted, and pictures of old router plus sledge hammer will be posted in due course.

Thanks for all the help chaps.
