hello all

I i were to buy a mini from about an hour from home, is there a way or getting it home by driving it. As I understand, its in good condition, and has good tyres etc.

Am i right in thinking that you can't get it taxed without MOT?

Obviously i can get it insured, and i know if you're on the way to a booked MOT appointment you can get away with that part, but is there a way around the tax situation?

Tom

ps i forgot to say I'd prefer a legal way home, and I dont have a trailer

The boring bloke who runs this place.

Berkshire

Book it in for an MOT, and insure it. Drive it to the garage, and no where else.

Do you not need tax to do this though, or does the driving to the mot station apply to this aswell?
I was worried because the tax disc is the visible thing that the plod see?

Hi,
You can do what you suggest, but trying to get out of the crap with the law on a bunch of technicalities is highly dangerous for your license.
The Police seem to bend the laws to suit themselves!

Hi,
You don't need tax, because you can't get it without an MOT.
As you say no tax will alert the fuzz, they then go for gold *surprised*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Herefordshire

Where is it?

Can you avoid major roads??

We've done this quite a few times, but not recently, and theres quite a few of those cameras about that check for road tax now

If your going to do it avoid all main roads, town centres, petrol stations, etc

Make sure you have enough petrol to do it

And if it breaks down dont hang around it

Whether you stick a tax disc in from another car is a debatable issue..

Hi,
"Tax off another car" That'll add fraud to the charges *surprised*
The way the fuzz approach things these days, I just don't think it's worth the risk.
Your insurance could go up as much for adding 3 points as it would cost to get a back street recovery firm to move the car for you.
However you could tow it, which may allow you to get it back without tax or MOT?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

surely if you book an mot for it you can dri ve it to the mot from where it is, and then drive it home even if it fails.

if you cant tax it untill its mot'd then how can you tax it,

maybe you're supposed to trailer to the mot then, buy tax when it passes? I'm looking for a fully legal way here, i don't want to risk losing my licence or even getting points.
Thanks for the info so far guys, keep it coming it food for thought

Hi,
You're allowed to drive it to an MOT with no tax or MOT.
However the fuzz will except it to be a local MOT station not one miles away. I'd imagine the fact that the log book won't be in your name won't help prove or disprove how local you are if you get pulled up..

Gavin :)

I thought they change the law about driving to a local mot station. I'm sure it has to be trailered if it has no mot. Maybe wrong on this.
Never used to get points for no mot...but nowadays they may impound car.

Hi,
I've drove 2 cars for MOT this year with no tax or MOT, but the MOT station is only 5 mins up the road.
AFAIK this is legal.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

just found this website...

near the bottom it says "Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test". it says you can provided you have insurance, but it mentions nothing about it being a local one.

would the police be helpful if i asked them?

i would have thought so, probably your best bet, check the legalities properly with the right authorities.

Bit o/t but when you "tax" a taxt exempt car do you still get a tax disc? Im guessing yes as youd get pulled up all the time or the cameras will see you dont have one - but what does it say on the disc? Just "exempt"?

And how often do you need a new disc is it every 12 months? Or is it just one special coloured disc that you can use forever?

Hi,
It's the exactly the same as paying for it.
You need MOT, insurance and tax renewal form or log book when you go to the post office.
Needs to be done every 12 months, says nil in the price box :)
Cheers,
Gavin :)

It is only legal to drive an untaxed/unmot'ed car TO AND FROM A PRE-ARRANGED MOT TEST...

SO you would need to be able to prove this if stopped.

But lets face it. What are the chances of getting stopped ? ANPR is an issue.....*ahem* show plates

Even if you decided to tow the car, both it, and the person side, would have to be fully legal in order to do so.

No tax is a potential fine
No MOT is also a fine. Neither of them carry points the last time I checked.

Most big plant hire shops hire out car transporter trailers. I know the ones local to me dont even charge that much. Although there is a hefty deposit for obvious reasons.

But if you get into the towing side of things.....lets hope you didnt pass your test after 1998.....as you're screwed there too.

speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will
