Hay all im going through the prcedures of planning my T project but am at the stage of deciding on wheel size as this makes a knock on effect to brakes and body mods i need a few opinions on both!

so if anyone has any views they will be great!

having not driven a mini on 10" or 13" not got much to work as mini has 12" but there are positives and negatives for both but i would like to pick the size that will give me the grip i require

10's as the mini was designed to run on them, also lowers centre of gravity but less contact patch, smaller rr for increaced acceleration.

13's higher contact patch 13x7's less wall deflection as a lower profile of tyre and more comfotable top end due to increaced rr, nd also if im running a "stiff" setup when on 13" due to the massive reduction of sidewall over the 10" when over bumpy sections will i loose traction due to the lack of "spring" in my tyre?

:)

You may have opened a can of worms, because opinions and experience varies greatly and some will argue their point until they throw the dolly.

Personally for fast road use, i've decided to go for 10" split rims with 7.5" Cooper S brakes. One: because they look great and Two: it will minimise the unsprung weight.

However, if you envisage a lot of track use and drive right on the limits of adhesion, then maybe you should consider 13s.

Don't worry about wheel diameter and top end speed/acceleration as your final drive will have a bigger influence anyway. I think the reason behind the variation in opinion about 13" vs 10" is due to the affects of offsets and wheel weights rather than diameter. Running any wheel with silly offsets will not be good for torque steer and will follow the ruts in the road nicely regardless of size. Likewise a heavy wheel has it's problems too.

thanks Bat, ive looked and found the thred but mainly choise was on looks etc but am looking perfomance olny *wink*

Paul s, yea was worried i would open a can or two but only looking perfomance, the smaller wheels will def reduce the unsprung but will be looking at track use also but is a way down the line but need to cover all angles thanks for the replys! :)

Not that I'm aware of but the width of the rim will give you a clue. I don't think there is a huge difference in offset between different wheels of the same widths, but what I'm trying to say is people who swear by 13s tend to run 13x6. Was it Robert on here that machined the mounting face of his wheels and fixed the torque steer problem? That tells the story I think.

Shropshire.

10" on the round nose, 12" on a Clubman, determine speed/acceleration with final drive and drops.

thats the link sm , i found that the differential and the wheel offset combine to create a frisky mini at 150 bhp on bumpy rds to put it mildly.
if i could i would get wheels with at least 24mm inset (or positive offset as its known confusingly)
the stock mini wheels are 34mm ish .

not completely true.. handling is down to a combination of different factors.

if you have a car set up on 10s and one set up on 12/13 you will get less body roll on 10s

Total bollocks. In fact I suspect the opposite, the larger tyre wall will deflect more on the 10s, causing MORE rather than less body roll.

This has been discussed at length. I think the conclusion is that the larger tyre walls on 10s flatter the handling of the car and are easier to drive on the limit, thus people swear by them. But properly used 13s offer certain advantages, mainly grip as better tyres are available. In any circumstance, don't go to wide with wheels/offsets.

Indeed. I doubt any of us are faster than the TT, and that's not on 10s.

Exactly. I don't think it could be made any clearer than this.
