Hi all,

Just a quick question, has anyone played with the ratios available in the minispares SC gear sets and found the best suited for a turbo mini.

in my thinking yes you want close ratios but at the same time you would want taller than std gears to load up the turbo to make it work and spool up with less load on the engine the turbo is not going to work as hard if you know what i mean.

I have tried 2 boxes the 3 syncro MK1 S box (which i just screwed 2nd gear in) and a 4 syncro MK11 box both fitted with 3.4 diff.

I was thinking of just changing to a 3.2 diff as this would lessen the wheel spin in 1st and 2nd gear and get me off the line quicker too.

tell me your thoughts people as i am about to outlay the money to buy SC kit from minispares and Quaife ATB from swiftune

I can see what your thinking, But I don't think it's the case.

For example take mine, with a 2.9 diff and the MS gearbox, I get around 50 mph in first, now the lag in first gear is very bad and it don't start hitting boost until around 30 odd mph! Now if i had a lower gear ratio i would be hitting boost sooner and would spend so much time being over taken! lol.

I can see what you are thinking, but the load is only really a problem in first (and maybe second) gear. The MS kit has taller first and second ratios than the standard box, so this coupled with a slightly taller diff should be the answer.

In reality theslightly less torque developed in first because of the reduced load is a good thing, as wheelspin in this gear isn't a problem anyway. Even with 7" slicks I never manage to get the throttle fully open on my car in first.

The MS kit makes a massive differance through the gears and is worth every penny.

Hi,
Don't know if you've seen this from the MS site?
4-SYNCRO 2.58 1.71 1.25 1.00 - CLUBMAN gear set. Ratios almost
identical to above as this was conceived
as a useful s/cut kit for the road, so same
applications - but without 1st gear probs.
2.54 1.73 1.22 1.00 - ST gear set. Taller 1st gear and slightly
closer ratios make it better suited to
circuit racing, rallying, and the bigger
capacity engines - ie. 1380cc plus.
2.31 1.57 1.19 1.00 - METRO CHALLENGE gears set.
Very tall 1st gear originally designed for
rolling starts, so less than ideal for static
starts. Low FD needed if used for sprints
or hill climbs, especially if 13” wheels
are being used.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Yes, a 2.9 with the MS gear kit is just a little to tall IMO.

thanks guys i appreciate your thoughts, I am currently using a 4 syncro remote box with 3.44 but i am not sure if the clubman gear set suites remote boxes, I have sent an email to Mini Spares and will see what they say.

but if they do fit i will order a 3.2 diff and clubman gearset and look forward to seeing the changes.

I dont think the Evolution kit can be put into a remote box as you would need to use your existing reverse gear due to it being machined differently for the remote selector,. I think you'd need you reverse as A and A+ 1st is a different ratio 3.2 vs 3.6??

I am using this kit which is the same as miniwilliams uses albeit the remote version
