Hey guys.

Just bought my first turbo mini. Its an ex Miniworld cover car (June 2000 for anyone who has a large back catalogue!), but sadly looking a little rough round the edges now and needs a magic touch. Its not running so well, but it seems to be massively overfueling, but I should be getting the mixture and fuel pressure set up properly this week. Could do with a lick of paint here and there and a couple of small dents removing, and needs a new interior. It was a bit of a bargain though!

We've called it Stinky - part of the reg plate is 5TNK, and it absolutely wreaks of fuel at the moment!!! Its our 5th Mini, and of the 5 we still have 2 others as well as this one still on our drive!

Its in good hands though, we've spent the last 12 months restoring my other half's mainstream Cooper (called Tinkerbell would you believe it*oh well*), so now its my turn!

Hope to see you all at some events this year - the only one definitely on my calender so far is Mini In The Mud, erm I mean Park! Despite the weather I enjoyed myself last year, and hopefully I'll be taking Stinky up the strip.

Carry on now!

Welcome! Sounds like a cool project.

I think they should rename it to Mini in the Pod. sounds better.

Yeah, Mini in the Pod sounds much better. Perhaps you should suggest that to them!

Hi,
Welcome to TM. :)
Over fueling could be down to the choke seals in the carb, a couple of members have had this problem.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Well, I've just booked it in with Rob at Minisport for Friday afternoon - he really seems to know his stuff and has done wonders with a couple of my mates Mini's.

Gonna try to get a boost gauge in before I go though, I'm sure its only running low boost at the moment - maybe 4 or 5 PSi (what was the low setting on the MG Metro Turbo?) and it feels like it needs more, but we'll soon see.

I'll let you know my results but I doubt they'll be anything special as it is a completely bog standard Turbo A+ as far as I'm aware, but with a Maniflow downpipe and Janspeed exhaust. Oh, and its fueled from a Facet Gold Top pump, which I believe is a little OTT for a standard motor. It does have a pre-verto clutch with an orange diaghram though (well, so I'm told!).

Would I be safe running 9 or 10 PSi for now providing the fueling is set up adequately? Could I go more on a completely standard engine? I'll be starting on a new engine, turbo & 'box build very shortly anyways.

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Welcome mate,

Minisport?!?! There must be another rolling road nearby that could do the job properly for you.

If it's set up correctly and has an intercooler 10psi should not be a problem at all.

Without an intercooler and the standard CR you will be best to keep it no higher than 7psi which is the standard boost.

However, it's likely that you do not have an ECU, in which case you will only have 4psi.

Browse through the beginners tech. You will find everything you need there.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

Yeah, there's no ECU in, so it'll be running 4 PSi then. Hence it feels like its got no guts - well, thats not really fair, it is quicker than my MPi, but my MPi only has 70bhp.

Rob at Minisport really does know what he's doing when it comes to setting cars up. I wouldn't have an engine built by Minisport, but I've got no problem letting Rob set my fueling and timing. Most of the other places round me either don't have a rolling road, or don't want to mess about with Mini's. Never had a problem yet with Minisport so I'll see how I go.

7PSi seems a little low - I know its a standard lump, but my mate just achieved 117bhp with a completely stock Turbo A+, no intercooler, running 12 PSi with clutch slip and the fueling was spot on, no detonation etc... And he drives it every day!!! I'm not convinced that 12 PSi is a terribly good idea, but I thought I'd be able to stretch to 9 or 10 PSi.

I'm not aware of the details of a Facet gold top, but if it is an interrupter type pump it isn't really suitable for a turbo engine, as these use fuel pressure 3 to 4 psi above boost pressure. As you are running only low boost currently then your total fuel pressure may only be 8 or 9 psi which you may get away with on an interrupter pump, however go much higher on boost and I personally think you may struggle, ideally you need to fit a rollervane injection type pump, these are capable of 3 or 4 BAR fuel pressure.

Well, I was told its a Facet Gold Top, which according to last months Mini Magazine is an interrupter type pump. However, I've just been out and had a look at the pump, and it looks nothing like the pumps in the picture in the mag.

All I can tell you is that it is fitted in the boot, external to the tank, fittings are at either end of the pump (rather than both on the side like the Facet Gold Top looks to have in the pictures), its loud as hell, and runs at a constant pitch when its on - ie the noise of it doesn't ever vary, its just constantly whirring away at the same speed. Oh, and as my fuel tank doesn't have the neck thingy inside it, I can see the fuel running back into the tank if I take the filler cap off, which it does at a ridiculously fast rate, so there seems to be a decent amount of flow there, but have no idea about the actual pressure.

Rob will be checking the fuel pressure on Friday anyway so I'll find out if its the right pump or not. If its not, what pump do you guys recommend?

It sounds like a turbo pump which is the following...

Of course you can get them other places but MS has a pic.

Thats the daddy! So I've got the right pump for the job then. Well, thats one thing sorted. Wonder why they said it was a Facet then??!! Strange.

Also I find odd, is that the original electronic ignition was removed and replaced with points. Any idea why someone would do this? I'm guessing I should get an Aldon Ignitor or something in there pronto?

Hi,
If you're going to spend money on ignition I'd go for Mega Jolt everytime :)
Other mappable systems are available *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Megajolt is on the list for when I build the new motor and box - didn't realise how cheap it was!
