I'm in the process of completing a 1275 gearbox rebuild and have found a problem with the casing which means it is probably U/S. The only other engine I have to hand is a 998cc. Does anyone know if the casings are compatible/interchangeable?

Hi,
As far as I know they're all the same. The diference is between the A and A+ boxes.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Bl**dy hell - something else I need to be sure of then. The case looks roughly the same attached to the block. Is anyone able to tell me the difference between A and A+.?

Thanks Bat, its just the casing I want to know about as all the internals are being replaced. To be clear I have a u/s 1275 gearbox case and a 998 gearbox case (unstripped and attached to a 998 block) and I just need to know if it is worth removing to use on the 1275 engine or if it will not fit for any reason.

Hi,
Where do you think the idler bearing goes? *surprised*
One goes in the transfer housing the other goes in the g/box casing. *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Sorry if I sound like an idiot but I am a DIY mechanic and this is my hobby and first full vehicle rebuild. I have read some posts about differences in the gearboxes and it seems that the actual 998cc gearbox casing is compatible (although there are comments about mechinal component differnces). I intend to use all the components from the original gearbox (most of which are new) but the casing which is damaged will need to be junked. I just wanted to know if the casings are compatible and therefore it is worth the effort of removing and stripping the 998 box.

Hi,
We're going the wrong way down this road *surprised*
As stated in my first post, as far as I know they are all the same, you asked about the casing so that's what I'm referring to. :)
The thing to look out for is the size of the hole that the shaft of middle drop (transfer) gear goes into.
One end of the shaft fits into the transfer or clutch housing.
The other end of the shaft goes into the g/box casing, this is what you need to look at.
The A+ casing has a bigger bearing fitted here than the A casing.
Therefore your idler drop gear will not fit into the other casing if they are different.
Are you with me now? :)
I'm no g/box expert myself :(
Cheers,
Gavin :)

What are the casting numbers on each of them, they don't have to be the same, but knowing them both will say which bits can/can't be interchanged.

Take the flywheel and transfer gear housing off your 998. Remove the standard drop gears from the 998. Take the drop gears you were going to use in the 1275 and try the idler (middle one) in the bearing of the 998 gearbox. If it fits then the gearbox casing is compatible and will be fine for rebuilding your box internals into.

U/S = unservicable yes!! Thanks to both Tom and Gav - I guess I'll take the 998cc box off and try it as Tom suggests I was just trying to save some effort of stripping the 998 if it was certain to be no good. If there is a chance I'll give it a go as late gaeaboxes are not as available out here as the earlier ones. Someone told me you can spot an A+ engine simply by looking at the dipstick receptacle. The earlier ones have a step or insert tube and the A+ is shorter. Is that right?

Hi,
That's right the A+ dipstick fits straight into the block. But it doesn't follow that it's got an A+ box if someone else has been having a meddle *surprised*

Understood Gav. The box is def not an A+ so its seems like a trip to the breakers at the weekend. I've just got the flywheel off (pre verto clutch) so I'll try offering up the new drop gears later anyway... just in case!! Thanks.

There might be no need to strip anything (to know the answer) if you post the two gearbox casting numbers, ie,

DAM 2886 in this case :):):)

I'll get the casting numbers over the weekend and take a pictire of the offending bit of the gearbox. It looks as if it has been rebuilt before Steve and not too well. A component mounting hole has been ovalled.
