S.u Piston Lift Optical Display = SPLOD

On another post we were talking about how to see the piston lift on the HIF to know what point to polish on the needle, I had a brainfart and came up with the SPLOD

Its a stack of optical slot sensors with a vane in them which rides on the top of the piston through a hole in the dashpot piston. As the dashpot is under pressure when on boost the whole lot is covered by a 35Ml syringe case. Each slot sensor feeds a led in the highly attractive display unit and Bobs yer Mothers brother!!

OK I dont have a clue if this will work on the car but....

The vane, "sensor array" and the bit of tubing that stops it slopping around.

The vane with piston fully raised

The vane with piston fully down

The highly attractive display unit!

Hmm..
1-1/2 inch hole in the bonnet? I'll have to think about streamlining it...

ha ha. pretty dam cool... All we used to do was drill a hole into the top of a dampener, fit a multi coloured bit of straight coat hanger wire, painted at different heights strips of red, yellow, blue, green etc & drive with the bonnet off so you can easy see it

But i like the "Electronic specialised SPLOD tooL" thing *smiley* well done *smiley*

I showed the SPLOD to my "buddies" this weekend, they could not beleive that I would spend time doing such a thing unless.....

In the end they decided it was REALLY for my wife, she straps it to my pecker and feeds me viagra untill all 10 LEDS light up then I get lucky...

Theres the problem, I'm still waiting for my pistons, nothing to try it on yet Its just a theory at the moment. Potential problems I can see would be the wire bouncing around or something with the pressure. Its also going to be difficult to install as the wire will not like being spun on the piston, maybe have to install it with the dashpot removed then fit the dashpot.. But as soon as the engine is back together I'll give it a try..

just one ill mention, have you thought about putting some sort of stop in the end, just so you dont lose the pin/vane when you come on boost or go over a pothole

chase up those pistons!

Good point, I kept that vane as light as possible so that it has the least effect on the piston height. though I have a brass rod just in case.
Currently if I turn it upside down it falls out and that would stop that as well, would help with screwing it into the dashpot as well..

I'm already thinking about a Mk2, mount the sensors on a board, use a plug (maybe flat ribbon cable) to interconnect so that it can be spun on easier and maybe a different enclosure so that you can drop the vane in after its installed then seal it, but before I do that I want to try this one to see if the theory flies.

I was using this yesterday and it actually works!!

There was a little bouncing when I hit a rough bit of road but generally all was OK and it was successful at telling me where the needle was at a point of drive.

Eventually some of the glue inside came loose and some transistors got shorted but the theory held, Next time I'll try to mount the slot sensors on a pcb and use inline resistors to cut down the number of wires.

In fact even a simple ally wire indicator, as long as it is sealed inside the syringe would have worked..

terry , could you drill a row of holes down the side of the su bell ,and have sensors in the other side ,and then as the whole air piston goes up it cuts off the lights to the other side ? it would have to be sealed of course ..

Hmm..

Would have to look at the shape of the piston..I would think that you would have to at least mount the sensors off centre as the rod that the damper piston runs in must be half way up and does go all the way up into the screw in part, but if they were aimed at the largest part of the piston and offcenter that may work...

I wonder if there is a mist of fuel up in there that would upset the sensors?

Hi,
You could always epoxy some clear plastic "windows" in the side of the dashpot?
