Hi,
You could always epoxy some clear plastic "windows" in the side of the dashpot?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

maybe use the piston itself as a reflector? You guys have me thinking again...

Hi,
"n" shape piece of coat hanger wire instead with a "slider potentiometer" on the side of the dashpot *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

As I had technical troubles with the first version I decided to do an "analog" version and its works very well..

I removed the gubbins and added a nice big red ring as a pointer. I taped a 16 station gauge to the syringe (slightly offset to allow for the depth of the jet) and marked the piston travel limits. When I drive its fairly easy to see what station you are on, even with my failing eyes!! I can see that the piston gets to the top OK, maybe a bit early so I plan to try a 12oz piston when it arrives.

It works great! I can see exactly what station is in use and this is going to make the polishing a snap..

I love this idea - im looking at doing something similar with my project (running a 2" SU).

What optical sensors were you using? As far as i know, they have a width of 6mm, when the 'stations' on the needle are 1/10th of an inch (2.5mm). So while they would help, they wouldnt be that accurate. How did you get around this?

I cant really use an analogue version due to not really being able to see the carb during driving.

If you look around (digikey?) there are some 4mm slot sensors, there may be some smaller ones. I found that 10x4mm sensors covered the lift nicely. The problem is that this means that you need to do a conversion because the sensors do not equate exactly to the needle stations. Thats why I actually prefer the analog version now, but If you cant see the thing then it will do the job.

I am not having any problems with sticking or vibration it seems to be OK..

I found the 4mm ones. There are also 3.2mm ones but they are surface mount, which would be a pain.
4x10 sounds ok for an idea of where the needle is, but i would really prefer 2.5mm sensitivity.

The only other easy way of doing it would be run 2 4x10 arrays offset 2mm. Probably easier than trying to make an array up of tiny photodiodes etc
