Just curious..
I see many questions about "what did this dizzy come from" but never seen anyone mention the number that is stamped on the advance mechanism. Why? is it not there? On every Lucas distributor I have seen, including the electronic ones there is a number stamped on the advance area that tells you what the max mechanical advance is (if you double it).

Surely thats the important thing? OK There may be a slight difference in rate but does it matter that a dizzy came from a Montego as long as the max advance is suitable?

If this one is 6 then its 12 degrees, very suitable if its 9 then 18 degrees then probably suitable....

So what number is stamped on a genuine turbo Dizzy?

I'm sure that looks like a turbo dizzy i had once, with all the electric gumbings removeed from the top half.

Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph

If you could, I would be interested to find out. I would expect something like 7 or 8.

I have just noticed what looks like another number in that pic, I'll have to look again. I have access to a dizzy tester, so could confirm that that number indeed relates to the max advance. If so It would be a great way to decide weather a particular dizzy is suitable...

Hi,
AFAIK the number on the weights is the max advance of the dizzy, doubled as you say for crank degrees.
The only other 2 variables are the springs, which control the advance curve and the vac can.
The can should have it's advance numbers on it too.
I've heard of other brands of dizzy fitted to minis, I think you can mod a Bosch and some Jap. ones to fit.
A w/shop or Autodata manual should give you the info you need.
If you can find the right weights in a points dizzy, no reason you can't transplant them into an electronic body.
If you get creative you could fit a boost capsule which will retard the timing under boost as well as advance on light loads. :)
Cheers,
Gavin :)
