agreed to buy something off ebay but as a "off ebay" type deal but the man says his paypal isnt working so that means id have to send him a cheque. its £250. are cheques still safe to use these days and is there any comeback if you dont get your item. blokes got good feedback but its to far to pick it up.

thanks

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

thats what my gut instinct says, i dont like cheques. you wouldnt send anybody your bank details would you but thats what your doing when you send a cheque arent you.

if i win the item on ebay then send postal order would that be better?

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Where is the item? Perhaps you can send your money to someone on TM that you trust who is nearer.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Hi,
What Paul said, Paypal or friend is better than a cheque.
paypal is far from bullet proof, but you've got a better chance than sending a cheque of to mr anonymous!
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I'm not a fan of cheques, as I've had a couple of seller tel me the cheque hasn't arrived, but when I chequed with my bank the cheque had been cashed.

That said with a cheque you do have the seller real name and address.

Surely if you're buying "Off eBay" in the normal sense of that phrase, PayPal protection wouldn't cover you anyway as the eBay rules have been broken.
If the seller says his PayPal isn't working, he more likely means "I don't want you to use PayPal in case eBay find out I've broken the rules and suspend me".

I'd only pay by cheque as much as you could afford to lose TBH, especially "off ebay" although it has to be said ebay are not interested in the event that you do get ripped off anyway.

As others have said, where is the item based, surely someone off here would be near enough to fetch it for you?

in all fairness my paypal sometimes wont let me log in or runs so slow it times out.

a pain when some auctions need 'immediate payment'

ive had a few moments with ebay, but Ive always managed to get the item or money back in the end, although sometimes its been more hassle than its worth!

Id email the seller with your concerns and if hes a reasonable guy im sure he would understand...

Good luck
Joe
