On standard engines I've never really bothered balance stuff much. However, yesterday I took a set of std 998 rods to balance. Just to check the factory balance so to speak.

I've got a picture of the jig I use, but it's on my phone, and I cannot get it on the computer yet.

Anyway, I first weight the BE as the SE is hung outside the weight. Then I measure the total weight. This result in perfectly balanced rods.

Here are the results

Rod BE Total
1. 521 661
2. 540 679
3. 527 664
4. 526 669

When building a performance engine, the rods should be within 1g end to end. As you can see from these number, one rod was almost 20g heavier, and it was all in the big end... After removing 20g from that rod I was almost in the ball park.

What a great foundry BMC must have owned :)

On the subject of balancing. I haven't seen it for awhile, but is it still good to balance cranks with clutch, pulley as an assembly rather than just the crank alone. Maybe talking crap & dreamt about it!

Hi,
Yes, balance the crank first, then add a bit to it and balance it again and so on...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
