I lost drive a while back so removed the engine and gearbox for repair. The engine was running fine so I suspected a gearbox problem. I couldn't find a problem but rebuilt the box anyway. Having put it all back together I still have no drive and the clutch pedal feels 'wrong'. I can put the car in any gear with or without the clutch but they don't engage ? I can even start the car 'in gear' but it makes very little difference. I can detect slight drag from the diff (?) on one of the wheels but thats it. Its only a very slight drag and you can stop it easily by touching the wheel with one finger. Somethings not right........

Any suggestions?:(

Hi,
You need to get someone working the clutch pedal while you look under the bonnet to see what's going on with the clutch arm.
I take it the clutch was ok when you rebuilt the box?
What do you mean by "pedal feels wrong" ???
Cheers,
Gavin :)

The clutch was okay before I took it all apart yes. The pedal has no feel. Gonna take the diff out I think...........

have you got it adjusted correctly? if you have adjusted the screw on the bellhousing too long it will hold the clutch 'on' all the time and you will get no drive.

Either a broken diff pin or a broken CV joint.

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

Hi,
If there's no resistance when you press the pedal then it's probably a hydraulic problem, but that doesn't explain the lack of drive, unless you've done what Slater suggests???
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Ill bet that your pot joints arent connected to the driveshaft properly!!!

Are the Engine mounts in correctly, i had the exact same probs where one of the bottom mounts had broke causing the drive shaft to depart from the pot joint.

Get someone to put the car in gear and try driving it. Meanwhile Lay "Beside the Car" NOT infront and you may be able to see the pot joint spinning around!

Carl has a valid point!!

Edit* but you say you can start the engine so this isnt the problem, but it could still be the clutch??

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I'm going to remove the diff tonight and will let you know. I think I may have two problems. Fairly sure the pot joints are in correctly.

leeds/wakefield.

sprocket what i'm thinking will have the same symptoms,
if the clutch centre has been ripped out , it will start as the ring gear in still there, you can depress clutch as normal .ish, put cog in gear but it just wont drive ,

Aparently the engine the clutch above was fitted to lost all drive, lol it was easter sunday last year on the way to Minis Vs Beetles, anyway, pulled the car over to the side of the road and it idled fine, could select every gear clutch in, clutch out, but no drive. Swtched the engine off, but then would not restart, the starter just kept spinning but the crank did not move *laughing*

Okay I removed the diff (cross pin type) and one of the pins has some movement. You can move it back and forth slightly. I will strip it down tommorrow but is this normal?

I don't think so but need to take it apart I think. I have a feeling I put the clutch plate on the wrong way round. Would this cause both the no gears and no drive problem?

Clutch plate was on the wrong way round. I will be testing it this weekend.

It was the diff. I replaced it with a minispares cross diff and its okay now. It wasa minisport cross diff previously. I now have an issue with the clutch!
