Hi all,

Heres my problem, my car runs fine, and you can drive around in it, as long as you dont get the revs above 3000 3500 ish.

Its a standard metro turbo lump, with a mini spi tank. The ECU has been fitted, as has the metro ignition (with the external box)

When you rev it up gently it cuts out, when you rev it up at once it cuts out.

When it stalls, you can sopmetimes save it again. Air is sucking in, turbo spinning. Not sure what to do. This is the last thing we need to do to get it done for MOT and I can finally drive it.

Anyone hava any ideas. Or any questions about my setup?

Tnx in advance, Roger

Tried two turbo carbs and two regulators, it ran fine on the metro. But has been sitting in the shop for a while now.

In my opinion there are only three things that can go wrong here:

1. Fuel problem
2. Air problem
3. Ignition problem

I dont think there is a problem with the air, its sucking like maaaad. So the fuel and the ignition remain....

There are a few things that spring to mind.

1) Fuel pressure reg (as Robert said)
2) Plenum gasket missing extra hole
3) 9 V supply to ignition module rather than 12 V. This is if you have used the 9 V ballast coil supply.

Check that you are getting 3.5psi of fuel pressure on idle.

Was about to ask how I know the regulator is working.

So I need to mesure the pressure between the regulator and the carb right?

Yes, you should get 3.5 ish psi with the ignition on...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

My bad..*blush*

To check it, take the fuel supply hose off the carb that runs from the FPR and put a pressure gauge on it (I used my boost gauge which seemed to be fine). If its a lttle high or low adjust the centre screw on the FPR untill its right. If your struggling to get adjustment to 3.5psi take the FPR apart and have a look at the diaphragm its possible that this has weakend, stretched or even split if its fairly old!

If all the other checks come back ok, try the 'T' piece trick. (if you do a search you'll find many different threads on this).

No, Its another fuel tank, pump and piping than the metro.

Hi,
Grab yourself an inline spark tester.
It's basically a plastic tube you put on top of a spark plug and plug the HT to the top.
They cost next to nothing and you'll be able to see if you are getting a spark when it cuts out *wink*
EDIT: They look like this....

Cheers,
Gavin :)

Hey, just wanted to close this topic with our solution. We went over everything once more, and found out that when the carb vent valve is not fitted, you need to close the tube it would normally be fitted to.

On non turbo mini`s you can just remove the plug no more action needed.

This resulted in the boost going up in the plenum, and not in the tubing that controls the regulator. So there was too little fuel in the system to keep the engine running at higher RPM.

We went to the dyno yesterday to get the fueling and so forth sorted.

The end verdict is that the turbo needs replacing. I'll post my dyno print here when I've been able to scan it. It puts out 96.5HP and 114Nm torque.

But the turbo only starts building up pressure at 4000 rpm, which is a bit late according to the documentation I have.
