Hi there does anyone know of any other companies out there that will sell a new ignition barrel and key (has a transponder in it) for a Toyota Hiace.
The main dealer is wanting £185 plus VAT for it (I only paid £550 for the van), or are they the only ones I can get it from?

Cheers Matt.

common fault. its so expensive because you get a key, barrel and transponder ecu. if i recall.

if you get just the key and barrel from a breakers it wont work. but saying that there is a way you can just use the barrel and key but this is a real pain to tune the key in.

if you can get the lock out try taking it to a lock smiths they may be able to rebuild it.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Hi,
Can you get the transponder out of the key, or is there a master key for Toyota systems (Red Key)?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

the transponder is moulded into the key so no you cant really get it out. toyotas have two different types of keys, master keys (black) and sub keys (grey) you can only tune a new key in using a black key. the idea behind the grey keys is so when you lend or take you vehicle in for service you use the grey key and no one else can copy a key.

if you go to a key cuttters they may be able to cut you a key and i think they "clone" the key rather than tuning a new one in. dont quote me on that tho lol.

or if you do get a barrel from the breakers then you could get a none imobilser key cut for it and sellotape the other bit of the old key to it lol

Hi,
There's always the "tape the original key inside the column cowling and use a non transponder key trick *wink*"
I did that once at a Suzuki main dealer *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)
