so am on the search for astra tdi anyone know what to look for when buying em ? what sort of mileage should i consider too much ?

i was also considering golf TDI (mk3) but have been advised that strut failure often occurs around 85k and they are prone to catastrophic oil pump failure.

any help folks.

cheers

Richie

I considered one of these a little while back. A good place to look is the honest john website then go to the car by car section. I found quite a lot of good advice there.

In the past i was to buy one Astra Dti, but my mechanic says it is not a good car. Attention to the engine gaskets...

A couple of my mates have the mk3 golf diesal's and have abused the hell out of them for the last 2 years and they are still going strong.

I would buy one for the daily hack if I needed it.

Edit, both have about 130k on them.

Hi,
If it's the Astra I'm thinking about the fuel pumps go on them and they're expensive to repair.
Apparently lots of them with knackered pumps can be found on ebay for not alot *surprised*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Agree with comments regarding the injector pumps, look on ebay for "non runner" and there are always a few Vectra/Astra diesels on there, new injector pump over £1000 apparently.

Hi,
My 1.4 Escort cost a £100 :)
Tax is only £100 a year, it's good on fuel and I don't need to worry about where I leave it!
Cheers,
Gavin :)

For £1000 I'd suggest you look at mid sized saloon cars, with 1.8 petrol engines. You will find that these really are excellent value for money without commanding the premium like the TD stuff does. Driven sensibly you can get mid-30's mpg on a run, and despite what people might say, most TD's are not much better than a petrol car if you just use them on start-stop driving around town. Spend £1000 on such as a Vectra/Mondeo/406 etc and you will get quite a lot of car for your money TBH.

The 1.9 TDI is a good strong engine that doesn't often go wrong. However at 140k you have to think about what else may have worn out by now?

My Audi has now done 155k miles. The turbo had been replaced before I bought it, and I've had to change things like CV joints and wheel bearings that have simply been worn out as an example. If you don't mind facing the prospect of having to replace such things then don't let 140k bother you, especially if it has a good service history. A mate of mine has a Golf Mk3 NA diesel with 241k on the clocks.

I agree with Tom. Parts shouldn't be too bad if you use URO or eurocarparts

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

one thing i will say is i have an astra 51 plate 2 litre 75 k on the clock no problems todate done 20 k in in 18 months

i took it from pontefract west yorkshire average speed to llandudno north wales last year and potterd about around north wales it averaged 63MPG!! .. i could not get my breath! *surprised**surprised*

apart from that no problems todate !
i hope i dont get any but i service it well!
just my opinion

with it been a 2 litre and not the 1.7 tdci .. the engines only ticking over to make the power .. hence will last for ever IMO

i have heard stories about the pumps, but doesent all cars have faults ??
