Hello

Im having problems getting a spark at my coil. The engine is a MG metro turbo engine, with electronic ingition. The wiring loom is a 1979 onwards mayfair/special loom bought new from minispares only weeks ago.

The dizzy as 2 wires coming out of it, stripped the outer sleeve off and the wires inside are red and blue.

The coil is a lucas electronic ign coil, as used on my 1330cc engine.

The loom has 3 female connectors. 1 is pure white, 1 is a double white/black and 1 is a single white/black *this is abit further along the loom*

Tried connecting it up, but cannot get a spark at the coil, any ideas? Am i overlooking something?

Put a jump lead on the POS side and down to the battery cable incase it needed a 12v feed. No joy.
Added an earth in case that was more, no joy.

Heres pics of the wiring and dizzy.....

Any help would be appricated.
thanks
Jordie

Hi,
I've never seen one, but I think that is a MK1 dizzy, for which you need a separate ignition mocule.
You'll also need to check you've not fired the dizzy by connecting it to 12v.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

we dont even have a spark from the coil at the minute *oh well* the coil is definately a worker too as it was running a different engine a couple weeks back...

Right, i can get another dizzy so thats fine.

We havent connected the dizzy to anything, so havent fired that.

Just trying to get a spark from the coil...

I need a spark from the coil before i can do anything else. How should it be wired? Its a lucas coil for electronic ign, as tuk said it was running on a N/A engine only a fortnight ago.

how you going to get a spark from the coil without a dizzy?

Should the coil not provide a spark from the lead that goes into the centre pin of the dizzy?

Or will it only spark with the dizzy connected up?

The solid white wire is the 12v feed to the coil, should go onto the coil + terminal. The double white / black wire goes onto the - terminal on the coil and the single white / black wire a bit further down the loom goes to the dizzy (a 1979 Mini had points so only 1 wire). If your other dizzy you mention has points and the coil is the electronic ign type, beware as you'll need a ballast resistor.

Neil

if you think of an old points system, its the condensor drawing the spark, i assume thats the same job as what the amplifier does. otherwise there would be no spark control as the coil would spark all the time.

So yes, you need a dizzy to check for a spark *smiley*

hope that makes sense, probably not! lol!

Hi,
You can get a spark out of the coil by feeding 12v to one side and touching the other side briefly down to earth.
Don't hold the wire when you do this as you'll get an almighty shock off it! *surprised*

we put a direct 12v feed to it from the solenoid, and a direct feed to ground too, yet still no spark.

tis wierd :-

we must be doing something wrong...
