Our washing machine/dryer is in a little room just off the main living room/kitchen (our ground floor is pretty much open plan).

when the washer is going, it makes a right racket, and tbh ive had enough of it whiring away when trying to watch tv

Anyoen have a clue about these things? what sort of price do these come in at?

cheers

joe

Dynamat or similar?
Or a layer of gypsum, inch thickness of expansion foam and another layer of gypsum seems to work wonders in my mates room. He's got nightclub-like bass in there and you can barely hear it from the next room.

Opps you're talking bout doors.Sorry

im sure that would work, but looking at simply fitting a better quality door rather then bodging the existing one

the wash room is also the acess to the office/patio, and dont want it to look like a students hovel, so no egg boxes LOL

would a simple solid pine door provide a benefit over cavity ones? or would a solid door be a better sound conductor?

Hmm dunno about that.
But maybe you could fill a cavity one with expansion foam or something?

Maybe a fire door might be better?

I used to work in a recording studio and believe me the doors were the worst to soundproof. You need to find out two things: Is the sound airborne or transmitted through the building fabric (floor/walls etc.) If you have no door at all (you said you were open plan) then a simple door is better than none. A fairly cheap soloution would be to fit a good quality fire door and seal the surround with draught proof. You can buy fairly 'pretty' fire doors if you look around at teh local bulders merchant. Other than that youre into alot of money to solve it Joey. Good luck.

Hi,
Fire doors are solid so that would be a good place to start, then nail egg boxes on the back *wink* lol

not being funny but soundproofing isn't easy to retro fit. Have you thought about trying a quieter machine??

Would fitting a draft excluder seal round the door frame help?

at the minute its just a hollow wooden internal door, im hoping a solid wood one (pine or oak) will make a significant difference, but not sure..

i can imagine a fire door being quite costly...

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

A fire door blank is around £60 plus vat depending in where you get it. That should make a big differance to a hollow internal door. Smoke seals will also help. The only thing is if you hang a big heavy door on a lightweight partition, you can start getting problems with plaster cracking etc if it gets slammed shut

Working up the BHP ladder.

Try sitting the washing machine on some heavy rubber matting. Few bits of old car inner tube should help

Yep I'd go with this idea first, makes sense to illiminate the source of the noise than block it out! *oh well*

If you have room...fitting some rubber feet to the bottom of the washing machine will make a hell of a difference! Only problem is they are usually made to be a "snug" fit between the top of washer and worktop. If there is no worktop above it your laughing?
