I had always thought the 'lump' present on the turbine housing on the T2/T25 turbo chargers looked like it was designed for a Lambda sensor - but with everyone always saying how they should never be put under pressure, or in excessive heat, I thought "well, maye not then".

So then I just happened across this beauty on the ebay:

Correct me if i'm wrong, but that looks like a lambda sensor in the turbine housing...

That said, this is 'old school' so maybe they stopped doing it soon after - but Garrett obviously decided to leave the boss in place for a reason (at least until the GT series)...

Hi
Maybe narrow bands aren't as fussy about pressure?
Cheers,

nice one dave but isn't that heat going to burn out a sensor unless it's a narrow ban not as good one??

All i know Matt - is that this is a factory installation of an O2 sensor into a turbine housing.

IE it was done, and this is why the 'lump' is on the turbine housing...

Do we know for sure that this was factory fitted though, perhaps it could have been done by someone with the correct drill and tap since it left a factory?

Thats an unheated one wire narrow band sensor, and is REAL old technology. Narrow bands are not as sensative to the pressure differencies. Its probibly only relying on a transient voltage signal anyway

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Might be an un-heated one-wire whatever - but the fact is - that at some point, this lump was used for a lambda sensor.

So if you don't have a sensor here - there is a big weight saving by grinding this lump off. :)
