Look around and you'll get a decent A4 1.9 TDI for that money. 55-odd mpg and great Audi reliability, and decent residuals too.

Only thing to watch for is the front suspension knocking, this is relatively easy to sort out though as the arms are available from the likes of GSF cheaply enough.

Other one in my list (if they are down to that kind of money yet?) would be a 2000-on Mondeo 2.0 TDDi or TDCi, good cars.

Well I am firmly in the buy a newer car with high mileage camp. Why spend £3k on a 10 year old audi or VW when you can have a 3 year old Citroen, Peugeot, Vauxhall, etc. If you are going to do galatic miles then why pay a premium for a low mileage car just to see its value tumble. Also if you are buying a diesel then they really do last.

I have a Citroen Xsara HDI sx. It was 3 years old when I got it and had 110k miles. It now has 174k and I have had no problems and only replaced consumable parts. There are plenty more arguments to back up my way of thinking.

However, if you insist on older cars then as Tom says, Audi, Mondeo (must be the TDci though), VW, golf or passat. Or maybe an older 3 series BMW.

Now you see up until a few months ago I would have also said the same, but a mate of mine has got a TDDI Mondeo, it is the same engine at the TDCI except for it is not common rail, e.g. it has an injector pump. I've driven his and it really is OK, 110bhp I think?

There is one that must be avoided though, think it is the newer shape "TDI" Mondeo?

That is quite interesting, still up until the late 90s the ford diesel was so far behind the competition it was a joke. The latest TDCi engine is great though.

The VW range of engines are hard to beat IMO. Especially the older 110/130 stuff.

Id prob opt for a Passat over an A4. The A4's are just so cramped inside.. Both have dodgy front suspension though with joints everywhere that need replacing

No idea what the Fords are like. But if it was me, I wouldnt buy anything French.

Ive a crappy old Volvo diesel estate...no idea what the more modern versions are like. I think the 5cyl engines are supposed to be fairly good though. Dont know what money the cars are.

I would keep clear od the 5 cylinder volvo unless it has had all the injectors changed. Cost >£1k to do and needs doing to most around 70k miles. (some more resaarch on this is recomended). They are good when running though.

Steve, I know your reservation about french cars, but I think you are doing them an injustice. Granted they feel cheep, but mechanically they are sound. If it is just a work horse then who cars if a bit of trim falls off? They are cheeper to buy, run, service, etc than their german counterparts and IMO the german cars are not so much better to justify the inflated price.

Something interesting about french cars (I also think they're shit but bens lemon just keeps rolling) is that the 205s were relitely well built, but the 309s were appaling. One was built in French Franch and one was built in Blighty, can you guess which?

The latest TDCi engine is great because Ford got someone else to design it for them (joint collaboration anyway).

The TDDi is OK but Ford's own TDCi (ie in this price range) have several latent faults. The common rail injection system was rushed out before it was properly developed so all the early ones suffer from failures of the injectors or the high pressure pump (the injectors are normally destroyed by iron fillings from a wearing fuel pump), injectors and pumps are VERY expensive and the EMS has to be re-calibrated for the simplest of changes.

They also have a Dual Mass Flywheel, designed for the petrol version, so self destructs with the torque from the deisel. Very high labour charges for that unless you want to crawl under the car and remove the gearbox yourself.

I bought an 03 plate (after the injector/fuel pump problems had been resolved), my DMF is in the latter stages of self destruction at 55k miles but it doesn't matter as six months ago the turbo failed (another massive job as the exhaust manifold and turbo exhaust housing are all in one piece!) so I just abondonded the heap of junk at the end of my drive and went back to petrol.

When it runs right, its good (but nowhere near as good as the new joint venture engine), but I know of more people who had had very expensive problems with them than I know satisfied people.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Hi,
What Retired is saying is true, they use the same engine in the Transit. It doesn't last long in there either *surprised*
I'd say buy something LPG, fuel is piss cheap and you get reduced vehicle tax and insurance too, apparently.

Gavin :)

I've got an A4, do everything on it myself, well designed and engineered, only thing I'd say is that some things tend to be larger than other cars, for e.g. splitting balljoints is quite a task as they are big in comparision to other stuff, the only other drawback is that everything has a cover over it, sometimes getting these off can take as long as the job itself.
Other than that though its not bad at all, a novelty for me is that in general main dealer prices are pretty reasonable for a lot of parts, for example I needed a new header tank cap, a genuine one from the dealer was less than £7 whereas the factors wanted £18 for a pattern one. The main dealers are also very helpful, I'm used to dealing with Peugeot dealers who on the other hand are awkward and useless.
As mentioned the wishbones knocking is a common fault but they are less than £35 each and not difficult to replace.

That must be the unreliable half of the BMW's then *wink*...or maybe just all BM's are dodgy !!!

A car that can get overlooked, are Mazdas. They do make some diesels, and in general, Mazdas are pretty damn reliable.

But also true bout the Pugs. If its just a workhorse, they can be bought cheap, and as long as you dont abuse them, they can give good service.

I just hate French cars !!!!!

Audi's are front wheel drive, although do use a longitudinal layout, with a transaxle.

Most VW are typical transverse style ( Except the Passat )

Obviously some offer a Quattro version too though.

I've had Passat 1.9tdi 110 estate for 5 years , 1999 model .
payed £4000 , 60000miles . Have thrashed it all over europe fully laden , brilliant !!
the suspension arms do wear , can get same quality as VW ones from Europarts , beware most of the cheap replacements last 12 months and one day [one year guarantee , i don't know how they do it ?!]
Would go for the SKODA if buying now , got the best build quality in the VW group

Depends what you are after, my A4 has this engine and quattro drivetrain, tows the trailer with a car on very well, if you are expecting it to fuck off up the road like a Subaru Impreza then you will be very much disappointed, although it is a confidence inspiring car to drive in the wet and snow as it has bags of grip.
Lovely engine, super smooth and quiet on the move, lots of torque, I rarely rev mine past 3k RPM, around town 26-28mpg typically, on a run on the m/way be nice to it and I've managed 44mpg.
However they are hard to find as the vast majority of the A4's were 1.9's, they also can't get near the 1.9's fuel economy, up to 55mpg. If you want one like mine (2.5TDi, quattro transmission, Avant body) then be prepared to look long and hard to get one for 3k, I paid £2700 for mine but its a bit rough round the edges when you look close, needed some work doing when I bought it, and is now on 155k. TBH I've not seen another A4 Avant 2.5TDi quattro for less than £4k.
For what you want I'd recommend a 1.9 to be honest, you'll get a much nicer one for your 3k. If you're planning to tow often then think about a quattro one, much better to tow with than front wheel drive IMO, none of this wheelspin bollocks pulling out of uphill junctions in the wet etc.
