What do people do with the bottom two studs on the manifold to turbo joint, do they put the studs in the turbo and put the nut on from behind the flange on the manifold, or keep the studs on the manifold flange and somehow put the nut on from the backside of the turbo flange? It really is an easy question but how can I make it sound so complicated?

studs in the manifold, then put the nuts on after fitting the turbo.

The turbo is threaded for studs so if I put studs in the manifold they won't pass through the turbo unless I drill them out (these are the "bottom" studs I'm talking about). Is that what everyone else does then? On 7th Nov, 2008 Nic said:

yup, you drill out the turbo for a clearance on the studs |

Excellent guys thanks. I'm just dummy fitting it all together with a spare turbo. TBH there isn't much room behind the T2 either, the flange is thick and I can see me trimming a bit off it to get the nut between that and the housing.

there is only enough room for a nut really but just put each one on a couple of turns then just go round tightening them up. no need to grind any bits out |

I've come across a couple of turbine castings that i've removed a little bit of meat from the web to give a bit more room for the nut. You could use a small die grinder carefully. |
