Hi all! Ive searched for some info on the topic but found few about pistons! In our performance magazine here in SA they had an article about powdercoating, so onto my question is it worth it to coat standard pistons? Will this have the same effect as having forged pistons? Will it work in a turbo application? Thanks very much in advance!

Hmmm so ill have to try find forged ones, unless there is another route i can take maybe? Will normal pistons af able to hold about 0.8bar with the right compresion ratio?

I presume you mean ceramic coating not powder coating.

The general view here is that it's not worth the money, as you can get a set of decent pistons for less than ceramic coating costs.

its possible to coat the skirts of the pistons, to decrease friction. This does not help the pistons handle the boost though. skirt coating is often worth it, especially on forged pistons where a greater skirt clearance is often needed, the coating may lead to a decreased clearance need.

crown coating i know nothing about, sorry

You see ill have to import pistons which will cost me an arm and leg due to our terrible Rand/Pound exchange, thats why i thought it might be cost effective for me this side of the world but thank you very much so far for the help *happy*

Crown coating is excellent. Less heat transmitted to piston more to exhaust = more power.
It works the same way as exhaust wrap!

Some of us Brits are now buying our pistons from Australia.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

0.8 bar isnt a massive amount. std pistons would easily take that with the right compression ratio.

yes coatings on pistons does make a difference ,
a '28 riley with a jipsy moth aero engine i tuned on the rolling rd ,,definately benefited from it ,
it ran cooler ,and was more reliable .

this was a big air cooled 4 cyl ,with each piston weighing a pound and a half ,and bronze heads ,so it put a big demand on the cooling system ,

the method used was to apply it oneself and it came from a company in gloucester i think ,and wasnt that costly .

so at what pressure point would my pistons start too become very holy? *tongue* hee hee sorry replacing them every few weeks wont be very fun hee hee. Sorry for all the questions, but ill rather sound stupid then have a nice view point from my head to the gearbox! Thank you all so much for the help!

Hi,
You can run 10 psi on standard pistons, if you use an intercooler too.
Obviously having the fuelling and igntion setup on a dyno / rolling road would be needed to ensure all is well :)
Cheers,
Gavin :)

The standard Metro Turbo pistons will take well over 10psi. They're a tough little piston & underated imo.

Standard turbo pistons are very strong.

I just machined a whack off the top, and used them. I never once had a failure that was a fault of the piston, and I regularly ran 20psi on a biggish T3 ( Every day in fact....it was so much fun back then )

They may look, and be ugly and heavy, but they are strong.

Yep standard pistons are definitely capable of more the 10PSI. I ran mine at 17PSI and on strip down looked fine. *wink*
