Hi all.
When i turn my ignition on, the oil pressure goes right up to 100.
What could it be. it was doing it last time i was working on the car ?

Cheers lads

Sounds about right to me, if thats from cold? *oh well*

The pressure relief valve could be sticking closed, but that pressure doesn't seem massively high considering the temperature outside over the past few weeks!

i assume he means when the engine isnt running.

if its an electric gauge then there is a wiring issue. i.e. dead short (if it works that way round)

Lol gotcha. Thats the exact reason ive stcuk with the simple hydraulic gauge..you know where you stand! *laughing*

In that case I'd check the sender first then wiring.

Ive checked all the wires and connetions, which all seem ok.
it also happens with the wires diconnected. Hmm im lost.
It shouldn't go straight up two 100 on the gauge like that.
Last time it was fine. it has a sender with it of course
This is the kind of gauge i have

Any pics of the rear of that gauge?

For it to go straight to 100 without the engine there must be a wiring fault somewhere.

Connect the wire direct to ground and see if the gauge reads zero?

does it work properly with the engine running?

I have seen oil pressure gauges do that before.

Tried that mate, but didn't go to zero. like i said, it was working fine before. could it be a fcked wire ?

No mate, still stays at 100.

Cheers.

could be an internal fault with the gauge itself? or your sender is fubared.

Hi,
Some guages will read Full Scale Deflection (FSD) when the input is open circuit. As suggested ground the wire that would go to the sender and see if the reading changes *wink*

As long as the thing worked fine before....disconnect the wire at the sender, If it goes to 0 the sender is fooked. if it stays at 100 the gauge is fooked.

Before you get a new guage disconnect the wire at "S" because you could also have the wire from "S" to the sender shorted to ground somewhere (as it goes through the bulkhead? or maybe the clamp has shifted and shorted out the wire at "S")

Terry

EDIT Just saw Bats post, His assumes open cct =100 mine assumes short to ground =100 either could be true ... Confused yet?

Hi,
Tel .. I'm fairly sure the air-cored gauges work the opposite way round to everything else, you just can't tell what type of gauge it is from the outside :(
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Sturgeo has just fitted one of these gauges and has exactly the same problem.

Goes to full scale when the ignition is turned on.

What was wrong with your sender?

Thanks.

The sender goes from 3 ohms at rest to 80 ohms with the engine running, so it appears to be working, but should this not be the other way round?

Most sensor work with a high resistance at low value.

Well i've fixed it :)

My pressure sender had 2 terminals on, one for the connection to the gauge and another for a "optional" earth. Turns out both the gauge and the sender need to be earthed to the same point.

Thats right. glad you sorted it mate.
What's your pressure reading by the way ?

Well i've only started it up to to test the gauge so the engine was cold and it was reading 60 psi at idle.
