If the local wheel place was Lap-tab don't bother, they look nice at first but as soon as you need new tyres the clear lacquer comes off in big sheets. From personal experience of my own and my best mates wheels.

I'd heard though that 2pac paint is less likely to flake due to chips etc than PC? |

is there a percentage involved when getting them powdercoated or something too, i seem to remember 30% laquer on mine to keep a matt black look. Mine cost a fortune to have done i went to the best possible place with loads of experience, and they are still as good as when i had them done. I don't know TBH, I spent a lot of money getting a set of wheels done there, admittedly they looked fantastic for about 12 months, but as soon as I had to have tyres changed the lacquer started coming off in big sheets. A mate of mine also had the same thing happen.

i've used lap-tab, they used to do my rims for 20 a wheel need a few sets doing myself in the midlands, i've been advised 2pac, if i could find somewhere to blast my rimscheap then i'd paint them 2pac myself due to having the kit!

The laquer peeling thing sounds odd to me. Powdercoat is a final finish. Why would they paint a laquer finish over a baked on powdercoat? It shouldn't need a clear coat over it unless you are trying to achieve some sort of finish effect.

Since then I've painted any wheels I want painting myself with 2k paint and lacquer. 61 Austin Seven; building a 1275 'over the clutch' turbo, R5 T2'd, custom intercooled, megajolt electrified, canyon carver

Laptab apparently stove enamel the wheels. They look great for a while but then the lacquer comes off.

powder coating will be much stronger than paint, the wheels must be stripped and chemically cleaned then etched primerd before coating, once baked will be hard as nails. I had my alloys on my mazda done by some guys we sell equipment to and there still perfect. definatly should be NO lacquer on PC wheels. Pristine alloy wheels do a good job but there Northampton way. to be geeky they use a Gama optiflex unit. very good stuff. |
