My brother is fitting an MPI engine in his mini, but running a carb and a MJ ignition system. He wants to use the existing crank sensor and coil pack etc. I have found: http://www.autosportlabs.net/MJLJ_V3_vehic...tallation_guide
but this is for a Ford pack rather than the MPi coil arrangement. Also, he's not sure how to connect the Camshaft sensor. So I thought you guys might be able to advise on this?
Has anybody fitted a MJ to a carb’d up MPI engine before?
Cheers,

Choppo. 8-)

bad guy: What's the easy way?
Hannibal: That WAS the easy way.

In short not I've not connected a MJ up to an MPI lump, but I can't see it being any more tricky than any other engine, assuming the MPI flywheel is a 36 - 1 arrangement. Don't worry about the cam sensor as MJ doesn't use them.

Not 100% sure about the coil pack, it should work ok with the MPI one but I'm not sure how long it'll last.

If you want I can pop round next weekend or one evening in the week to give you a hand (helping a mate with his car this morning & really want to crack on with mine afterwards, by fluke I'm building a new MJ loom for one of my cars amongst other things).

Hi,
The Mpi trigger wheel built into the back of the flywheels is 36 -1 -1 -1 -1.
That is to say it has 4 missing teeth, not equally spaced.
The EDIS module won't work with that pattern.
Coil pack should be fine, I'm using the MPi one on my VEMS ECU.
The triggering problem can be solved by either buying a SC or KAD trigger wheel setup or making your own.
The other option is to upgrade the ECU to MS, VEMS or any other that will decode the MPi trigger.
The ECU upgrade could be the way forward if you want more control like ignition retard when the inlet temp increases or more toys like boost, fan and Fuel pump control.
EDIT Don't bother with the cam sensor, unless you want coil on plug or sequential fuel injection. Take a look at to see what I did.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I would have thought the coil pack would be fine, after all it is just a wasted spark coilpack the same as any other. I'm planning on using an MPI one with my MegaJolt in any case, just so I can use the proper MPI leads.

Just a thought; are the MPI coil packs the same impedance and the Ford ones? Obviously it would still work but over time what's it going to do to the coil?

You cant measure impeadance without specialist test equipment, you can test the reistance though *tongue* Its going to be much of a muchness, as these coils work in the same way and from what ive seen the dwell times are roughly the same

As for the MPi trigger, it wont work on EDIS unless yo add three teeth to the flywheel giving a 36-1 pattern, even then you would have to relocate the missing tooth to 90 degrees BTDC

Far easier to fit a crank trigger kit.

If you don't run the correct era Ford Coil Pack the EDIS module does burn out...
