In the last 6 months my mums health has taken a turn for the worse, she had been struggling on at work for quite some time but now she is a a stage where she is unable to work, and she has lost her job and obviously income.
She has been signed off by the doc for 3 months possibly longer pending tests and diagnosis as they arent sure what the problems actually are. When she left her job, she was paid 8 weeks pay as "redundancy" now this has started to dry up, we have been looking at what she is entiteld to claim for. We have applied for housing and incompatancy benift, the local council have sent a letter through today wanting to know my dob, NI no, and want me to produce 5 of my pay slips and bank statements to prove any funds or savings I have stashed away. Im guessing that the amount I have will effect the amount she will recieve in support? Is this correct? The prob I have is the lump some I have stashed away is for my house, and I have been working every hour possible to save that money, and last tax year I earnt alot through doing this. Im worried that they will expect me to use my funds to support her instead of them paying out. Please dont read this as Im not wanting to support her, because this is far form the truth. It just pisses me off that I have to work my ass off to get the cash, and I pay my taxes and NI contribution, but get nothing for it, but any young chav who doesnt want to work gets to sign on and claim for everything he likes!!!!
Does anyone know where I stand on this?

Hi,
Can you shift the lump sum into a family members account? That may help a little.
That's the government for you, waste what you pay them, then want you to pay out for what they should be.
Failing that buy your house and move out, then they can't get their hands on it!

first off, do not disclose any of your saving to them, simply tell them you have no saving, of show them an account with very little in,

they will do everything to either not pay anything or only pay what they really have to, so do all you can to screw the bastards from the start,

been there, learnt the hard way when i had an opperation in 2000.

just keep info quiet. Another option could be to register yourself as living elsewhere - another family member etc so you are no longer a member of the household

after 3 months your mum can claim dissability living allowance go for that

to get any form of benifits in swindon, you need to have children, and no money to support them!!!

I think you are best off going to see the CAB, they will be able to explain what the situation is, never been myself but have been told they are very helpful.

CAB is my next step, before I do anything. I had thought about moving money about but was worried about it being seen as withholding info therefore fraud. I have been looking at houses over the last few months, but not really too happy to buy at present, im not sure if the fact that im looking to move out will go in my favour? My main concern is with the amount I earned in the last year and the money I have to ne side will end up with my having the "burden" of suppoting her indefinatly.
