I thought I'd swap the gearbox on the British Open this evening (I must find something better to do with my Friday nights) engine came out nice and easily but I couldn't get the blooming flywheel off to save my life, when it eventually cam off this is what I found:

Never seen one like this before.

never understood the 180 degs our C clip , what difference does it make, none as far as i am concerned. i certainly dont put the clip in with no 1 at tdc, , it goes in whichever way it goes at the time,

ive seen slightly worc C clips but nothing like that, its a thrusting side thing for sure, was it excessively high miles.

edit, has the f/wheel fretted at all,

carl

Hi,
I've no idea about the TDC reference.
As long as you put it in from the top so it doesn't fall out, it's sorted.
I don't see how you could bend it like that unless you backed off the puller half way through?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Depends how you take the flywheel off - if you remove the clutch diaphragm spring assembly first so your are just pulling the flywheel and leaving the driven plate and pressure plate behind hanging on the primary gear, then yes, it would "normally" make no difference - it woud probably just fall to the floor if it's upside down.
If your pulling the whole lot together (which is how the manual says to do it) with the thrust bearing plate removed and the puller bolts fitted through the 3 holes in the diaphragm plate (diaphragm spring on a verto) provided for just that purpose, then, if upside down, it will drop into the gap between the flywheel and driven plate as everything moves forward and will be bent as pulling continues.

For that reason, I always dismantle the clutch first in case someone before me has put it in the wrong way up.

However, even then, on the later flywheels, there is an additional groove machined into their boss just behind where the C clip sits which it can drop into and get caught anyway.

So having it the right way up is good practice.

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Yes I'm with that carl as your pulling aways from the clip and it's free to move over it as it likes, it's only whn putting f wheel on does it help to st up at the right 180 degrees so you don't bend it then, if it moves.

Pre-verto if you pull the flywheel and clutch together (as per the manual). Same happens on a Verto
Extra groove in the later (verto in this case) flywheel where it can catch even without the clutch assembled. I think this groove is in some non-verto flywheels too.
Photo doesn't do it justice but it is actually partly in the groove.

Nice work retired, that's clear to see. So a standard flywheel can bend it then, An after market one that most people seem to use doesn't have this groove, so would be ok.

Nowhere near your photographic abilities !!!!
I would say if there's no groove (standard or aftermarket) and the clutch is unbolted, it would just drop on the floor. If there's a groove or the clutch is still assembled, it can be bent with the brute force of the puller once it's caught. Slightly better photo of it caught (or gravity just stopped working in my garage)
