I took the MG for a drive this evening over to Bath and every thing went fine until half way home when I lost all power, after coasting to the side of the road the engine died. after waiting a couple of seconds I decided to see if it would start, and it fired into life on the first turn of the key, then drove as if nothing had happened. It did this a couple of times last year and I still can't get my head round what is going on, any ideas?

sounds like dodgy wiring (coil feed or something) IMHO that is the only thing that can 'reset' like nothing happend That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

I had a Vauxhall Nova which used to do that. It turned out to be the ignition switch, grease in it having turned into black horrible gunge. Cleaning cured it for good - the final straw had been when the wretched switch stuck and the starter motor wouldn't stop...

my sunbeam alpine used to do this , it was a load of rust in the tank blocking the outlet. Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM |

more likely ignition than fuel. 'Where does the engine go?' |
